Discussion
Average Joe in Texas would say he's having people over.
Hosting guests is not really an expression. You host a party or an event, esp. if you're upper crust. You do not host guests, as a matter of course. Just because there are examples of such usage does not make it right.
Everyone can say I'm preparing to have guest (best choice) but having houseguests would imply that they stay overnight.
