According to Black's Law Dictionary:

TORT= 1. A civil wrong for which a remedy may be obtained, usually in the form of damages; a brach of a duty that the law imposes on everyone in the same relation to one another as those involved in a given transaction 2. The branch of law dealing with such wrongs

Other definitions:

*A private or civil wrong or injury, other than breach of contract, which violates a person's legally protected right(s), and for which the law may permit a remedy in the form of money damages.

*A wrong for which a civil (as opposed to criminal) action can be brought
