English term

toll charges

English to Spanish Tech/Engineering Telecom(munications)
Terms of a 411 (information) service for mobile phones:
"Airtime and applicable **toll charges** will apply."

I'm proofreading a text and the translation reads: " tiempo de emisión y las **tarifas de llamadas de larga distancia **aplicables."

As far as I know, 'toll charges' doesn't imply that the calls are 'long distance' and the document doesn't imply it either. Am I wrong? Should I change it to 'tarifas especiales' or something like that?

This is for the United States.

Thanks

Jorge Merino Jan 12, 2009:

sobretasa / carga adicional

You are right Claudia, even if in general "toll" applies to long distance calls, since the deregulation of telecoms, now you can have a tax for any special service or whatever reason the telecom operator wants to charge for.

So if you want to translate "toll" with this meaning, "sobre tasa" or "carga adicional" is what you are looking for.

cargos por llamadas de área extendida local

I called AT&T and asked what Toll charges were and this is what I was told. It refers to extended areas within your local area. It is a specific long distance charge, less than a regular one.

neutral David Russi : It is a special case, Lydia, it is not the norm, and in any case, they are still considered long distance. Yes, but the question posed is a much more general case, and clearly "toll" means "long distance", it's been in Webster's for 30 yrs.

They are Long Distance, true, but a specific kind. On your phone bill it shows BOTH Long D, charges and Toll charges, so they cannot be translated as the same. In any case, I state the term that is used by AT&T.

Here is another thing to consider. If you search "toll or long distance" in google you will get 74000 results. Keep in mind that the "or" here does not imply these are two different things, rather it indicates that these are two different ways of saying the same thing, they are synonyms.
