French term

GAEC (in agriculture)

French to English Other Agriculture Legal structure
Wikipédia confirms this is a "Groupement Agricole d'Exploitation en Commun". My first thought was to translate this as "cooperative" but the same article goes on to say:

"Dans l'esprit des fondateurs, il s'agissait d'un outil de coopération entre plusieurs agriculteurs, une sorte de mini-coopérative (bien qu'un GAEC ne soit pas une coopérative)."

It probably doesn't matter for the marketing-based text I have in hand, but does anyone know a more accurate and widely-accepted translation? Thanks!

producers association

This is just a suggestion, as I don't know of any accepted term of this very French form of business. In the sentence, I'd put "GAEC producers association" or "GAEC association of producers". It's a form of company often used to manage family-run farms where the (adult) children form a GAEC with the parents, for example, nothing like a cooperative. It means that the farmer and his/her 'associates' are employees of the GAEC, not self-employed farmers.

I agree with the other respondents that you shouldn't translate GAEC, it needs to be left in the text as it is. However, since this is apparently a marketing text some brief explanation is needed that gives the non-French reader some idea of what it is without interrupting the flow of the text.
Note from asker:
Aggh. I mean GAEC. I blame my encoldened state :(

agree Rachel Fell : producers' association - "production groups" in this link - http://www.charles-de-gaulle.org/article.php3?id_article=175

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "as eggsacion picked up, I needed something a bit less indigestible than GEAC in the text. In the end I've gone with "farming association" which seems to be in use fairly widely (my text is about stock rearing, so 'producer' wasn't really appropriate). I agree that in terms of technicality it should otherwise be left as it is (although, confusingly, GEAC in Euro English seems to be something else agricultural altogether), so I have put it in from time to time. Thanks for all your contributions, and hoping future searchers read all the answers! "

I would leave it untranslated (and explain in brackets what this society stands for)

merci !
agree Charlie Bavington : I used the following in a footnote, some time ago "partnership of farmers, intended to approximately replicate how a ‘family farm’ operates" - whether that would be appropriate here, who knows.

agree Gabrielle Leyden : I leave "GAEC" in the text and explain, e.g., "farming partnership", "collective farming undertaking" or something to that effect..
