French term

externaliser

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology)

I know that externaliser is usually translated as 'outsource' but I'm not sure it's the case here. Could it simply be 'transfer'? SSM is the shared backup solution. I haven't a clue as to what the DSI infrastructure is. Perhaps someone could shed some light? Thanks in advance.

Transfer Transfer sound good to me. They are referring to remote backup systems as far as I can see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_backup

Re DSI
* DSI (Distributed Security Infrastructure). It is a security framework which targets distributed environments, and is meant to address any specific security issue such platforms may be concerned with. More particularly, it is meant to address security needs of carrier-grade Linux clusters, for the telecommunication domain.

DSI is an ongoing research project, supported by Ericsson Research Canada (Open Systems Lab).

agree Miranda Joubioux (X) : This is what I understand too

Thanks Miranda
agree Simon Mountifield : That's my take as well - offsite storage. The platform data are backed up and then stored offsite (for easy recovery if an incident occurs). Interesting, your DSI. I thought it was the usual "Direction des Systèmes d'Information", but you may be right.

Clearly not a direct translation, but seems to fit the given context...

on parle bien de sauvegarde donc ca me parait approprié
Note from asker:
Now I'm really confused because I was also reading the first sauvegarder as backup just like Tony did.
but it must be backups because then it continues to say that 'ces sauvegardes' are transferred/exported, etc. to the DSI infrastructure
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Yes, Sébastien, but if they are going to backup and THEN 'externaliser', how could this work then? / Oh, I was reading 'sauvegarder' as 'backup' already?

they save it first and then back it up on the DSI infrastructure / Back up also implies to put them somewhere else

thanks
agree Alain BERTRAND : Tout simplement... Dans le contexte du Disaster Recovery Management le terme Back Up intègre, de facto, l'externalisation vers un serveur étranger à l'environnement initial.

This puts the emphasis on the security issue. Talking about transferring (Outsourcing) the Backups into a Data Warehouse that can be seen as a safe.

It's about outsourcing the data warehouse management when the hardware costs and security hazards are too important.
