French term

les Tenebreux

Non-PRO French to English Art/Literary
Comic song title:
"Je suis les Tenebreux"

Discussion

rhartleyanug Aug 6, 2020:
withdraw I withdraw the first point -- it is correct, but I suppose that was what the original translator meant. The title "comic song" seems a bit unusual.
rhartleyanug Aug 5, 2020:
Et j'ai deux fois vainqueur traverse l'Acheron:
should be: And I have twice (as) victor [not vanquished] crossed the Acheron
Also: soupirs de la Sainte should perhaps be "sighs of the Saint" not "whispers"

the dark one

Here are the lyrics together with a translation:

Mon front est rouge encor du baiser de la Reine;
J'ai reve dans la Grotte ou nage la Syrene...

Et j'ai deux fois vainqueur traverse l'Acheron:
Modulant tour a tour sur la lyre d'Orphee
Les soupirs de la Sainte et les cris de la Fee.

Translation:

I am the Dark One, the Widower, the unconsoled,
The prince of Aquitaine whose Tower is abolished:
My sole Star is dead, and my constellated Luth
Bear the Black sun of Melancoly.

In the night of the Vault, You who comforted me,
Surrender me the Pausilippe and the sea of Italy,
The flower which pleased my bleeding heart to much,
And the trellised vine where the Vine Branch allies the Rose.

Am I Love or Phoebus?...Lusignan or Biron?
My forehead is still red from the Queen's kiss;
I have dreamt in the Cave where the Syrene swims...

And I have two times vanquished and been through Archeron:
Modulating in turn on Orpheus's lyre
The whispers from the Saint and the screams from the Fay.

Words: Gerard de Nerval
Music: Donald Swann

darkness, gloom

I think that it should be "Je suis les ténèbres". But, it's probably a play on words (pun) meaning that I'm darkness, but also, I'm a dark, handsome man! Un beau ténébreux means, a man with dark, brooding good looks.

I'm the Grim Reaper, Mr. Satan, Mr. Darkness, Mr. Death 'n' Doom

This should give you a ballpark idea. Wish I had a few lyrics to soak my neurons with.
Peer comment(s):

agree marfus : do you realize that your 'neurons' thing here came out due to the influence of the 'nerval' sound above? it's stunning how we keep doing such stuff in the most subcontionable way [the Vienna wizard's spell? damn...] AND your e-msg was touching indeed!
