Glossary entry (derived from question below)
German term or phrase:
fieses Gefühl
English translation:
disgusted/disgusting feeling
German term
"fiese Gefühl"
The text is an interview with someone famous who has lost and manages to keep off excess weight: "Wenn es ums Abnehmen geht, kennt er kein Pardon. 'Ein viertel Pfund zu viel un schon passt die Jeans nicht mehr' sagt er, und seine Hose sitzt in der Tat provozierend eng; binnen Stunden sei das 'fiese Gefühl' bei ihm aber wieder weg, und zwar durch 'autofaschistische Behandlung der eigenen Person'. Und bald schreibe er eine neue Diätfibel..."

Proposed translations
disgusting feeling
Second thoughts - maybe it is "disgusting feeling" - it depends whether he hates feeling fatter or he hates himself for having put on weight... not 100% clear from the text! |
annoying feeling
or maybe even: stupid feeling.

feeling of discomfort, feeling of disgust, uneasy sensation
"feeling of disgust", should there be guilt involved with eating.
According to Hegel, the urge of eating evokes an "uneasy sensation".
I guess it all depends on the larger context of your translation.
"After the eating binge, a feeling of disgust towards themselves, depression, or feeling of guilt set in."
"If we attend to the appetite of hunger, we shall find in it two ingredients, an unesy sensation and a desire to eat." (Hegel)
As the meaning doesn't seem to be completely clear from the context, perhaps "uneasy" would be the best solution as it includes some of the meaning of "discomfort" and also "disgust". Thanks for the suggestions and extensive examples! |
