German term

Feld

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Motorsports
"In den Saisons XXXX, XXXX und XXXX ist ein Feld von min. XX Fahrzeugen pro Veranstaltung am Start gewesen."

And also here:

"Ein qualitativ hochwertiges Feld, welches auf international bedeutenden Strecken in X, Y und Z im Rahmen von hochwertigen Serien antritt."

From a German text about motorsports (Formula racing, that kind of thing). X, Y and Z are the names of countries.

I can't fathom the meaning of "Feld" in this context.

Steffen Walter Aug 27, 2008:
No need for excuses, Stephen - KudoZ is a give and take exercise, after all...
Good lateral thinking re. non-drivers and their (lower) impact on the environment, though ;-)
Stephen Gobin (asker) Aug 26, 2008:
Thanks everyone so far. My excuse is that at the age of 40 I have never learned to drive and have no intention of starting. I wonder whether the government would ever consider giving people who've never learned how to drive a massive tax rebate because we cannot pollute the environment ;-))

... i.e. the field of circuit drivers (as in "Starterfeld")

"In exceptional circumstances, such as in extremely poor weather, a race may begin behind the safety car, which will put its orange lights on at least a minute before the start to indicate this. When those lights switch to green the safety car will lead the ***field*** around the circuit in grid order."
