German term

Veranstalter

German to English Marketing Cinema, Film, TV, Drama Broadcasting
I am translating a marketing contract for a television channel and am having problems trying to find the right translation for this word in this context. Here are a couple of examples of how it is used:

"Sender veranstaltet ein Programm unter dem Namen XXX"

"Sender als Programmveranstalter und Inhaber der Vermarktungsrechte ist daran interessiert, sämtliche zulässigen Werbezeiten über sämtliche Verbreitungswege exclusiv durch XXX vermarkten zu lassen."

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks

Rebecca.

EC Translate Aug 11, 2008:
Hosts/produces depending on whether the sender has developed the program or not comes to mind.

I don't know what a "Veranstalter" usually is in this context, which is why I asked the question. The definition I gave below was what seems to be the case from the overall impression I get from the contract. "Producer" would seem to fit the context though.

For the case s/he is his/her functions include organiser's functions, but are not limited exclusively to them.

It's a "programme producer" for the 2nd sentence that 'produces the programme' in the 1st.

"owner of marketing rights (Inhaber der Vermarktungsrechte)" is clearly distingushed from 'producer' in 2nd sentence of the source German text. Hope the links below will help you. His interests as a promoter are defined in the 2nd sentence.

Failed to post the following entry into "Discussion" field.
The term in question should be "(Programm)Veranstalter' (programme producer) and the former should be edited appropriately.

Thank you and danke for grading, Rebecca
. It's valid for cable TV producing companies, but to be sure one must read the whole contract.

organises/organiser

You could use "organise" in a variety of guises.

e.g. event organiser
to organise a programme of events
Peer comment(s):

neutral Edith Kelly : this was my first idea too when 'on automatic' but IMO it has to do more with transmission, especially in the first sample sentence

promoter/producer/presenter

Withou knowing the precise function of the "Veranstalter", it is impossible to accurately translate this term, which has a variety of possible meanings.
Note from asker:
As I understand it, the "Veranstalter" owns the online channel and is responsible for organising its content etc. It's hard to try to describe it any better than that.

Note from asker:
Interesting link, but I worry that "host" would be confused with the host of a specific programme.
Peer comment(s):

agree Susan Zimmer : also "program host" Program Host/Feature Producer http://www.cpb.org/jobline/index.php?mode=print_listing&list...

When broadcast television stations first transmitted their signals digitally at the end of the 1990s, U.S. consumers received a benefit besides the clearer pictures: a multitude of new channels made possible by digital compression technology.
The effort, in large part, was a roaring failure. Almost no one watched them because getting the channels required an external digital receiver. Some early programmers soon went bust.

ABC News Now began four years ago as a 24-hour news service on digital multicast. But ABC has abandoned broadcast distribution and reconfigured the programming to reflect the style of "Good Morning America." It is available to 44 million consumers only through premium broadband, mobile services and cable.

I would have preferred to put my confidence level at a 3 rather than 4. This is just a suggestion. I'm certainly not sure.

agree TonyTK : But I'd prefer "programming provider" (plenty of kosher googles in a cable TV context). "Programmveranstalter" is most probably a synonym for "Programmanbieter".

owner of (TV) station / TV station

Admittedly low CL; from your explanation "Sender als Programmveranstalter" and disregarding legal niceties I reckon that the TV station or the operating company that owns the commercial rights.
