As for your last question, I think it applied no matter how he got the ball, whether as a pass from a teammate or whether he intercepted a pass

Well, truth be told soccer/football/футбол bores me to tears but the same thing is said of American football players (or even basketball players), usually along the lines "He's a threat any time he gets his hands [sic] on the ball"

I found it in English-Russian football dictionary: trap means приём мяча.

Gary's option is very good, but in fact приём мяча supposes how good the player is in stopping the moving ball after his partner's pass then keeping the ball and footing it.
