Spanish term

RESULTADOS FINANCIEROS POSITIVOS

Spanish to English Bus/Financial Accounting P&L account
This appears as a line item in a P&L account.
While the term "positive financial results" makes sense in a narrative, I am unsure about what it means here - does anyone know for sure please?
(pref UK english)
Thanks

Discussion

Nikki Graham Jun 19, 2008:
The context provided is P&L account = profit and loss. The term asked appears in these statements all the time. No more context is necessary. If you don't know what a P&L account is and have never translated one, you should just move on.
Comunican (asker) Jun 19, 2008:
Hi Henry: I did explain that I had no more context. But subsequently I was able to work out what the term meant in practical sums - ie "income from interest and similar" minus "expenses on financing and similar".
As I was adding that as additional information, I found out that the term had already been answered.
I am not sure why but it was not thrown up automatically by the system when I asked the question.
It was not my intention to waste people's time.
Regards.
Taña Dalglish Jun 19, 2008:
Hi Comunican! Yes, as I was inputting my suggestion, you closed, but am glad you found your answer! Good luck!
Henry Hinds Jun 19, 2008:
A comment for Nikki. The asker has provided practically no context at all, and even for those quite experienced in translating financial statements this could amount to no more than a guessing game. It would be better to see your support for CONTEXT.
Nikki Graham Jun 19, 2008:
A comment for Henry Hinds. The asker has provided enough context. If you have experience in translating financial statements, then the context is obvious. If you don't, there is no need to bother with the question.
Comunican (asker) Jun 19, 2008:
My apologies, everyone - this has already been answered correctly - see http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/accounting/2562...
It didn't show up when I posted the question; maybe because I put the term in capital letters. My apologies for wasting your time - was not deliberate. :-(
Comunican (asker) Jun 19, 2008:
Hi Andres, thanks for your reply - point taken about "earnings" vs "results" but that still sounds more like a narrative (as in "IBM reported positive financial earnings despite predictions of losses") rather than a line item in the P&L... do you see what I mean?
Comunican (asker) Jun 19, 2008:
sorry, Henry, I normally do provide context, but this is just a line item in the P&L account , on the "Debe" side
Henry Hinds Jun 19, 2008:
Without any supporting CONTEXT, we will also be unsure about what it means "here", because we do not know what "here" is. Thus, there is no basis for anything other than "positive financial results".

That is, unless you supply more CONTEXT.

Positive Financial Earnings

In a commercial context Resultados is usually "earnings" or "Turnover."

Profit, or revenue are a couple more options here.

I did lots of P&L statements in two different commercial translation courses at NYU, and I assure you that the word earnings on a profit and loss statement works just fine. I would definitely go with that over results.
Note from asker:
Many thanks, Andres. Please see my comment above and that I have closed it as it has already been answered, but didn't show up when I posted it. The translation is "profit on investments" - ie "income from interest and similar" minus "expenses on financing and similar"

POSITIVE FINANCIAL RESULTS

Why not?

That's what is says. What it actually means is usually on a "need to know" basis and in this case, the client probably does.
Note from asker:
Many thanks, Neilmac (in case you didn't see the note above). I have closed it as it has already been answered, but didn't show up when I posted it. The translation is "profit on investments" - ie "income from interest and similar" minus "expenses on financing and similar". Regards

Financial Profits

A suggestion and if I understand your concern. Perhaps, this may help.

Rather than looking for a narrative-type, I believe "Financial Profits" may fit the bill as it relates to a line item in a P&L account.

Peer comment(s):

agree Nikki Graham : Profit in singular is better, I think. See: http://wrds.wharton.upenn.edu/demo/bvd/description/Amadeus_F...

Thanks Nikki for your suport. Agree in the singular form. Matters nought really as the asker closed at the very same time as I was inputting my answer and has made his choice. But again thanks. Un abrazo.
