Discussion

Jim Tucker (X) Apr 25, 2008:
Ultimately, it just doesn't look right in a formal context.
natasha stoyanova Apr 25, 2008:
Do you believe there is such an article that might cover the WHOLE evolution of culture? And the fact that there is "ON"/ABOUT means that there will be some presentation of fact/thoughts, etc. within/on the vast subject
brave_mushro (X) (asker) Apr 25, 2008:
great thanks, that was really useful for future work
Jim Tucker (X) Apr 25, 2008:
Seeing it without "The," my expectations as a reader would be that the article cites a few examples of evolution in culture, or even just raises the possibility that such a thing exists, for example, rather than that a comprehensive overview is to follow.
Jim Tucker (X) Apr 25, 2008:
...you may encounter something like "Evolution of Culture" but it is a kind of shorthand, as you might see in a university course description, or on an Internet site. On paper, its effect is in fact less comprehensive - less vast - than with "The."
Jim Tucker (X) Apr 25, 2008:
N.: as M. suggests, there is a difference: "Cultural Evolution" is fine without the article because it is unspecific, but "The Evolution of Culture" is correct - a specified form of evolution. Similarly "Science" but "The History of Science," for exmpl.
SirReaL Apr 24, 2008:
Obviously, "cultural evolution" and "the evolution of culture" differ in terms of grammar, in case you didn't notice.
natasha stoyanova Apr 24, 2008:
Why Culture is Common, but Cultural Evolution is Rare' ; Britannica online encyclopedia article on cultural evolution
natasha stoyanova Apr 24, 2008:
All examples are certain, on this very subject, you cannot compare it to the vast subject with many, many sub-subjects: 'Evolution of Culture. Discussion on the Importance of Truth (True Knowledge of Reality) for Human Cultural Evolution';
SirReaL Apr 24, 2008:
Hi Natasha, I don't see Jim agreeing with you. "The" is most likely needed.
brave_mushro (X) (asker) Apr 24, 2008:
Спасибо!
natasha stoyanova Apr 24, 2008:
At least, take away "the", because it is a general subject

On (the evolution of culture)

This is how it's usually done.

"Towards the question of" is a more official and "scientific" way.

Thank you, Sergey
agree Jim Tucker (X) : "on" for "О(б)" in titles, yes, though omission may not be as radical as you suggest to Milena, and would also work in many cases, even for an article - it's "muscular" // Agree abt newspapers.

I would imagine it should be driven by whether the article is scientific. A newspaper article should do without "On." Thank you, Jim

see reference below
You don't need "about" since it's a title.....

neutral SirReaL : Possible, but a bit too ambitious. For instance, it is a fitting title for a whole book, but not an article.
