Spanish term

mapas de arrancada y perfo

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Sports / Fitness / Recreation Motor Racing
From a technical car race report:

En la medida de lo posible y ahora que correremos en alturas menos cambiantes, deberíamos estabilizar los mapas de arrancada y perfo para dar mas estabilidad a los pilotos e ingenieros durante las sesiones.

Thanks for any help.

You're right Alvaro, its seems there are several different types of engine maps, one of which is a start map, if you post an answer I'll award you the points.

Must go now! G'luck! :O)

Apparently someone hid my first note - at least I can no longer see it. :O)
moken Apr 24, 2008:
The other part has to do with electronic mapping set-ups - maybe with the mapping used at the start of the race to ensure a quicker start, which would later be switched to a different race mapping. :O)
Wil Hardman (X) (asker) Apr 24, 2008:
HI Noni, yes Alvaro also mentioned that- I think it's probably right- there are quite a few loan words from English in the text.
Noni Gilbert Riley Apr 24, 2008:
perfo=performance do you reckon?

start and high performance maps // start maps and performance?

Hi Wil,

Sorry I was in at the deep end yesterday.

I hadn't entered an answer earlier because I'm not at all sure about the terms you'd use in English.

Worse still, reading the question again has raised doubts as to the Spanish meaning itself:

Now I'm under the impression that 'perfo' here might also be an engine mapping set-up, probably along the lines of "high or maximum performance", which I would take to be the mapping used when the car is meant to go full-whack.

Yes, their are different maps, another for example is a 'fuel-saving' map, used especially when there's a pace car out and competitors don't need or want to be guzzling fuel; or when your car's running short on fuel in the final laps of a race and you'd lose too much time if you pit-stopped.

What adds to this notion is the lack of an article in front of "perfo". See how this reads differently:

deberíamos estabilizar los mapas de arrancada y perfo
deberíamos estabilizar los mapas de arrancada y LA perfo

This first (your text) seems to imply that this perfo is a type of engine mapping, whereas the second would seem to imply that it's something completely different.

Hopefully you'll find more clues in your text.

Finally, another idea:

You have enough detail in English to ask an English mono question. If you explain what it is you're looking for you might be able to find further help from English translators who don't track Spanish questions.

Good luck with it!

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Hi Alvaro, I think perfo is an engine map. Also 'performance map' alone is fine as 'high' is implied. Later on in the text it refers to start maps in English so i'm sure we are along the right lines. I also enjoy sports translations, but so far I have found them hard to come by. Thanks for your help :)"
