Am struggling immensely with the wording of this sentence - here is what I have so far:

If Hierro, Muñoz, Santiesteban, Pirri and co made history with Real Madrid it was, to a large extent, as a result of their success in Europe.

How to incorporate 'no en vano'??

Yes, I think that's it. Its saying that his dream, etc. etc. about the Copa de Europa was not in vain because that is what has helped them to have made history at real madrid.....I think

Could it be that the no en vano is referring to something previous, and this is the example of whatever it was not having been in vain. Because to me it doesn't seem like it fits IF it is translated as not in vain. For example, was it talking about

neutral moken : Hi Ronnie. If "it" means his dream, you can't place it in the past. He's a young talent currently playing for the club. His dream is yet to come true. Also, this is not the player speaking (see quotation marks), but a remark made by the interviewer. :O)

As with the 'topicazo' question, I wouldn't go too literally on this one because it just doesn't seem to fit nicely in English. More so because this is not even a part of the player's quote, but a remark made by the interviewer.

My suggestion would be to substitute it for something along the lines of:

After all, if Hierro + co made history with R.Madrid it was largely due to their European exploits.
