English term

low ratio

Non-PRO English Other Automotive / Cars & Trucks
what does 'selecting low ratio' means? Does it mean selecting first gear or second gear? Or something else? And what is meant by 'switches'?

context is off-roading:

Tyre pressures are lowered to increase the size of our ‘footprint’ in the soft sand and 4x4 and low ratio are selected via easy-to-use switches

4x4 type vehicles have high and low gear ratios

Lots of vehicles intended for off-road use have a double gearbox — in addiiton to the standard 4- or 5-speed gearbox as found on ordinary cars, they have a second box that lets you select 'high' or 'low' ratios; you would use 'high' (= higher speed for same engine revs i any given gear) for on-road driving, for example, but might well use 'low' for off-road — lower speeds but greater power.

The use of 'switches' suggests that this is some kind of elecronically-controlled gearbox — old Land Rovers used just to have 2 gear sticks!

agree Jack Doughty : Yes, come to think of it, I have heard of this. I have withdrawn my answer.

Thanks, Jack! Sorry to be a pain!
agree Ken Cox : right on. except that 'power' is not the right word here -- low ratio gives you more effective or usable torque at lower road speeds, which is what you need for travelling over rough roads and offroad terrain

Sure, Ken, of course: I was just simplifying my explanation into layman's terms for Asker's sake. Thanks!

agree hazmatgerman (X) : German term would be "Geländeuntersetzung", working on all normal gears.

agree kmtext : I know it's not exactly the same, but if you think of it in terms of cycling, it's like changing the sprocket driving the chain as opposed to the sprocket on the back wheel. It gives more torque at lower revs - ideal for mud or steep slopes.

Thanks, KMT! Yes, the analogy is a good one!

low gear in general

Probably first or second, but some big trucks have twelve or more gears, so even third gear might be considered low.

disagree Tony M : No, sorry, Jack — it doesn't say 'A low ratio', but specifically 'low ratio' — it's a specific feature of this kind of vehicle.

an undergear

"A low ratio, like 4 to 1, makes it easier to move away from a stop because of the mechanical advantage provided by gear reduction. The principle is similar to using a longer lever to move a heavy object. (To confuse matters, lower ratios are numerically higher; 3 to 1 is a lower ratio than 2 to 1)."
