This is from a University website. I'm not sure how to distinguish between "formation par la recherche" and "formation à la recherche". "Training through research" seems a good option for the first term but what is the difference between that and the second term?
La formation doctorale est organisée au sein des écoles doctorales.
Elle consiste en une formation par la recherche, à la recherche et à l'innovation, qui peut être accomplie en formation initiale ou continue.

A lot of post-grad courses include research seminars. I'd move away from a literal translation and try one of the above. Even "research (skills) seminar" could be a possibility to indicate that the course involves studying the skills of research, not the subject studied per se ...
