COMMENTS APPRECIATED!
Given that the frequency of the vocal chords varies with the speaker’s gender, age, and other factors like slow/fast register, emotional state, etc; the percentage of gradation that occurs during vowel emission and the direction of this gradation is pertinent to indicate the type of tone.

what is important to focus on
The other answers aren'ts wrong, but I'd like to make some other comments. Here is my take on the sentence:
"Since vocal CORD frequency will vary depending on the sex and age of the speaker and other circumstances of the speech situation such as slow or rapid register, emotional state, etc., what is important to focus on is the type of tone and the percentage and direction of gradation as the vowel is being uttered."
(The only reason you see "vocal chord" everywhere and even in some dictionaries is that people misspelled it for so many years that has become recognized as an alternate spelling - the same with "diptheria". However, as linguists, we should get it right.)

appropriate when indicating
My wording; sure there will be others :)
That's quite tough. You're right on your doubts on the use of 'pertinent' here. It doesn't sound quite right.
And you call this EASY this time :)))
