Il fenomeno della protezione di territori attraverso l'istituzione di aree protette sta assumendo una proporzione rilevante a livello internazionale ed europeo , infatti dai dati raccolti dall’IUCN risulta che il territorio mondiale protetto ammonta attualmente a circa il 12% delle ***terre emerse*** e meno dell’1% degli oceani, diviso in una rete mondiale di oltre 100.000 aree protette ed ha visto la propria superficie triplicata negli ultimi venti anni.
