Italian term

gladio a stami

Italian to English Art/Literary Archaeology weapons
Hello folks. Got a bit stuck here with my Orientalizing Period daggers. You know how it is....

Anyway, we have an iron dagger with two or four "antenne" ... also known as a "gladio a stami".

I've turned up nothing that is remotely useful so any help will be very welcome.
TIA
Angela

antennae dagger

Hi Angela.... I hadn't actually encountered this term myself until now, but after a little googling I have found a great many uses of it in orientalizing (and other) contexts in the ancient mediterranean.

Google iron dagger antennae and you'll see the list

Unlike other areas of temperate Europe, metalwork (apart from gold) seldom produced items that deserve the name of art (at least according to the criteria of classic art historians). The weapons employed by Gallaecians were spears and falcatae (curved short swords) in the south, and spears and antennae daggers in the north.

Yes yes, the site is a little cheesy. But they call this an "antennae sword" http://www.aurorahistoryboutique.com/products/R000013_L.jpg

antenna(e) hilted gladius

the style was used earlier (e.g. Bronze age) and copied later, I gather from my "research"

At the close of the 7th century the Etruscans conquered Rome and established a military dictatorship. This situation prevailed for perhaps a century until the Roman people expelled their Etruscan overlords. Much of the arms and armor of this period was very similar to the rest of Villanovan culture with swords being fashioned of bronze. Patterns were very similar to the bronze "antennae" hilted weapons in use by other peoples of the age.

Characteristic for the Bronze Age are antenna-hilted swords; finds are spread from the Balearic Islands to the Gangetic plain (Copper Hoard culture, both on the Baleares and in India found in combination with double axes).

short sword

Lots of sites with pictures of this arm (apparently belonging to the Samnites (Sanniti in italian). One site has gladio a stami (corte spada). So I would call it a short sword. If your translation is about the Samnites maybe short Samnite sword.
For pictures of a gladio, look at: xoomer.alice.it/davnomac/sanniti/smarm01.html-13k
