He'd been fielding women for years because he was rich and it usually showed.

What was he doing with the women?

to (manage to) catch

As Linda says, in baseball, or preferably cricket you will hear cries of "well-fielded".
In this context a player manages to catch a ball because he is alert and agile, or just in the right place at the right time (that's usually my experience).
In your context he catches women because he is rich and it usually shows.
However, and I may be splitting hairs here, I would not say that he necessarily consciously used his wealth to attract the women.
Like a lot of other men, he tried to seduce women, but, unlike a lot of men, he regularly succeeded because his wealth showed.

using the charm of his money to attract women

In baseball, "fielding a ball" is to catch it. This is not a use of "to field" that I have heard before, but it makes sense in a rather cynical way.

agree Ken Cox : or simply 'attracting women' -- possibly derived from or related to 'playing the field'

this gent has gotten used to a lot of female attention

In my opinion, this man's evident wealth has meant that he has been the recipient of a lot of female interest and has become accustomed to dealing with it.

From what we have to go on, I cannot tell if he uses his wealth to attract women, or if some of these women are attracted simply because his wealth is obvious.

This man's 'magnetic qualities' may mean that he 'plays the field', that is to say he has or has had many intimate or romatic relationships, but that may be a suggestion too far from the context.

All the best, allp.

Apologies for the typo, it should read 'romantic relationships'.

taking his pick

He obviously attracted enough female attention that he could afford to be selective about which women he spent time with.
