A financial instrument used by companies to reduce the risk associated with adverse or unexpected weather. The seller of the derivative accepts the risk by charging a premium to the buyer: if nothing happens, the seller makes a profit, but if the weather turns bad, the company claims the money. Unlike insurance, weather derivatives cover high-probability events.
Las compañías de seguros aseguran cultivos (crops) contra inclemencias climáticas: granizo, etc. y están calculando índices climáticos o meteorológicos para determinar la tasa de riesgo de estos seguros y en base a ello calcular la prima a cobrar para cada cultivo en cada zona, que dependerá del índice de porbabilidad o tasa de riesgo de sufrir una inclemencia climática en las épocas en que el cultivo se encuentra más vulnerable.
