"Nourish" and "nurture" see to carry far more intimate connotations than those that would be conveyed by "protejida y apoyada".

En este contexto, yo lo interpreto así. (dice: "Civilizadion itself passes by way of the family) Suerte !!

You nurture living things, plants, for example.

Se cultiva a los seres vivos, plantas, por ejemplo.

Según el "Diccionario del Español Actual" de M. Seco, O. Andrés y G.Ramos:
Cultivar en su sexta acepción es: Cuidar el desarrollo [de una capacidad (cd)].
Fomentar: Promover o favorecer el incremento [de algo (cd.)]. Ejemplo: En Tánger, ...se esforzaban en fomentar la discordia de nuestros compatriotas.

Creo que nutrir es más apropiado para nourish. Es una opinión.
