On one of the rare occassions in which I actually get to speak with the author of this document, I managed to ask her about this question and she told me "é melhor em nível da sentença", so there it goes!

I think the disagreements are stemming from the difference between classic prescriptive grammar and terminology used in linguistics. I saw the same thing with "grammatical persons" vs. "persons of discourse." The lingo is different!

but "cláusula" (portuguese) is "sentence" (English) - somewhat tricky:)

clause level

A single sentence can contain multiple clauses. Sentence is "locução" -- you have a very sophisticated author who is not going to confuse the two.

I went back to the drawing-board on this one. Michaelis gives 'locução' as the translation of English 'sentence'.

Be patient: I will ask my Portuguese linguistics professor for help us out on this!!

Here is what my Portuguese linguistics professor answered:

Nível da cláusula quer dizer "Clause". **Acho que isto é usado como adaptação do inglês.** "Sentence" em português é frase. Locução quer dizer "phrase" como em "Noun Phrase" - locução nominal. Tudo nem com você? Abraços, Clea

Notice that Cléa says: **Acho que isto é usado como adaptação do inglês.** Linguistics has its own terminology, quite different from classical grammar.

I've checked several references, and it seems to be ambiguous. In linguistics, "clausula" is borrowed from English. (I was wrong about locução.)
