French term

bilan de connaissances

French to English Science Science (general) nanotechnology
Used in a study about the effects of nanotechnology on health

Discussion

Mariusz Kuklinski Apr 10, 2006:
Janet remarked it is a figure of speech. It is indeed, not only in French
Rachel Fell Apr 10, 2006:
Agree with Walter and his suggested translation (though it could be more).
Oliver Walter Apr 10, 2006:
More context needed. Bilan de connaissances is not part of nanotechnology. What kind of thing does it say about this bilan? Perhaps it means "all that we know" but I'm not a mind reader.

assessment of current knowledge

If it's page 8 of the reference, this translation could be used. "Un bilan de connaissances complet a été produit par notre équipe et porte sur les connaissances actuelles relatives aux types de nanoparticules, ..."

balance of knowledge

1.The more focused nature of research and the broader scope of teaching effectively complement each other to ensure a balance of knowledge

2. ... remains committed to building an IT staff that maintains a balance of knowledge not just in the network field, but also in the IT field as a whole
Peer comment(s):

disagree Oliver Walter : "bilan" is "balance" only when it is an accountant's balance sheet.

Knowledge Review

Unlike 'Review' 'Assessment' is used to evaluate; it involves grades, ratings, and so forth.
Peer comment(s):

agree Miranda Joubioux (X) : Yes - a very good suggestion!

Late but thank you Miranda!
neutral Oliver Walter : Indeed, and bilan can mean just that.
