Let’s take the example of stereotypical “traditional” women who throw themselves into child-rearing, only to find their nests and their arms empty when their children are young adults. Often, husbands are not used to their spouses needing or wanting to spend time with them, and the marriage needs to be revisited to find its strengths; this can be an awkward and painful transition. Sometimes, because the workforce and higher education have been forgotten, the traditional woman has difficulty finding a place to spend her time where she can continue to feel productive. There is a large hole that is left, and the past is spoken of wistfully, as if nothing can compete with that time of her life. Life is not getting better; instead, it’s getting emptier.
I would define myself as traditional, yet with a modern twist. I am a stay-at-home carpool mom, complete with minivan and mom’s group activities, yet I also am employed and have the luxury of working out of my home. I work with my husband at his business, the business of helping others through charity, and working side-by-side increases our respect and admiration for each other.
