maine apse
I think it's the maine apse abside principale

Relations :
Tout : choeur
Équivalent italien : capocroce
brought me to :The chevet is an apse, always enclosed by an open screen of columns on the ground floor, and opening into an aisle, which again opens into three or more apsidal chapels.
In the beginning of the 13th century in France, the apses were built as radiating chapels outside the choir aisle, henceforth known as the chevet (French, "headpiece"), when the resulting structure was too complicated to be merely an "apse."

Take a look at the Italian and English versions of the below site where "capocroce" is translated as "east end" (possibly due to the lack of an adequate English translation... but who knows?? There's also a photo).

... are two small parish churches in the St Lô region with the usual ground plan with the flat east end of rural sanctuaries. The nave is simply covered with a timber-framed roof, the choir has two bays, the tower is above the nave at La Barre, but projecting from one side at Saint-Pierre, and the flat east end is lit by three windows.
www.mondes-normands.caen.fr/italie/Patrimoine_architectural...
The French version of the site calls it "chevet":
www.mondes-normands.caen.fr/france/patrimoine_architectural...
And in fact the word "chevet" is also used in English:

capocroce (part of the church at the eastern end of the main aisle)
It's certainly hard to find!
One article decribing different types of capocroce - is at http://www.archeogate.it/vicino_oriente/article.php?id=290&o...
Other articles I looked at in Google seem to me imply that it is that part of the church at the end of the main nave - where usually there is an altar.... but none of the It-Eng dicitionaries have a word to translate it into!! Those web pages which translate for you, leave it as is - maybe that's the best thing?
Sorry not to be of more help.
