the history effect

history effect: in an experiment, the effect that external factors, unrelated to the experiment, have on the subjects during the time of the experiment. When you assess your results, the difference between your pro test (before) and your post test (after) has been affected by the external event.

maturation effect: internal changes within the subjects that occur over the course of time.

History/maturation effect are standard terms used in experiments. Students have to explain what they mean in exam papers. http://www.mccombs.utexas.edu/faculty/frenkel.terhofstede/46... (Which guy are you talking about?)

The sentence is a bit tortuous alright.

Decoded: study carried out over a short period of time to reduce the effect of non-relevant variables.
