remodelling vs. redecorating

no remodelling of the store-front is allowed, only redecorating.

I\'m not sure if this only applies to the store-front or the whole store?

reconstruction is another option for remodelling

Ed, I don\'t think there would be much difference in the two English terms. I would still use remodelling and redecorating if it were the whole store. The thing to determine is whether the Chinese text is referring to only the store-front or the whole store. You might be able to decide from the rest of the text. But maybe not.

My feeling of the Chinese is it applies to the whole store.

This lease agreement doesn\'t say what is allowed or disallowed, but it does mention \"redecorating, repairing, remodeling\" as potential work categories done to the rental property. See top of page 3 of the pdf file.

Thanks.
agree billychang : I think it is decorating instead of redecorating/Looking at the context again, this is like rnting an apartment, the tenant can decorate the apt without painting the walls or put nails in the wall.

Thanks, Billy. Sure, decorating is fine too. But typically in these situations there is already some decorative scheme existing, and the tenant wants to change the appearance, or refurbish to suit his/her taste or business need, imo.
agree fanyizhuanjia : remodelling and redecorating is different

neutral chica nueva : you can't make 'alterations' - put in/remove partitioning etc.

Suggestions

装修 - Remodel
装饰 - Refurbish

IMHO - in your context, "remodel" and "refurbish" should be a more appropriate term than "renovate" and "decorate" respectively.

Usually when renting a place the landlord will allow you to paint, to drill a few holes, nail a few nails. However (s)he obviously will not be too thrilled if you want to seal up a window and open one up on the other side of the shop. All the words that have been suggested so far are pretty close (I would even say they are synonyms) - you have to judge for yourself....
