I got this succint message from a gmail adress this morning 6:00AM, it must be a bored scammer or a newcomer to the cheating industry.

Dear Sir or Madam

Are you ready for a translation project of 5000 words and if so what is your price and method of payment?

Regards

--- staff

I do not dare to post the very generic agencies name, who knows!

Does any translator answer to such an offer?

It is the "Dear Sir or Madam" that gives it away... Mar 4, 2008

I never trust an e-mail that offers me any type of project with that kind of greeting. I have a name and whichever agency/company sends me an e-mail, must have a reason for contacting me and not anybody else...

It is either that or that they are not yet very sure if they want to translate the text from english to spanish or from finnish to german.

Another good reason for me was the
"Are you ready...?"

Reminds me all the proposals I get asking me if I am ready to buy a fake Rolex or to enlarge who knows what.

is the fact that they don't even say from what language to what language. I observe you almost all have more than one combination to offer.

I got it too, and in the middle of a most-unavailable period. I didn't even feel compelled to reply "no".

My reply... Mar 4, 2008

Just because I had couple of minutes free, I replied to their E-mail as follows:
Dear sirs,

strange E-mail received from you.

I can consider your proposal only after having received the following data:

• Registered business name
• Registered address, city, province, nation
• Intra-EU VAT no (if you are in Europe) or your Taxpayer's code
• Your history
• References

As you surely understand, a simple "GTA staff" and a gmail address are not an adequate "business card".

Thank you

Kind regards

As supposed, no reaction at all.

Claudio

I think they should try harder Mar 4, 2008

This sloppiness really won't do. Over the years, we've come to expect a much higher standard of scamming from our Nigerian (?) colleagues. They're never going to obtain ISO 9001 certification in scamming if they carry on like this.
