I have Avast 4.8 installed on my personal computer and since the latest update to its database, it says programs I consider to be legitimate (Spybot, Copernic Search program, etc.) are infected with a trojan.
Has anyone more info on this? Is there any reason to be worried?

Thanks,
Nicolas

Same message Dec 3, 2009

I got the same message today about some wordcount software that I just bought. I wonder if it is an error?

I don't use Avast, but I've heard about and seen this type of problem for years. AV software monitors, let's say "behaviors". I'm guessing that the most recent update of Avast started monitoring a new behavior, which your legitimate software is performing.

Basically, "Oh my, the Women's Temperance League has just discovered that I drink two beers each night after work". Yes, there is the possibility that any given person might drive home afterwards, but this person doesn't. It's bee

Basically, "Oh my, the Women's Temperance League has just discovered that I drink two beers each night after work". Yes, there is the possibility that any given person might drive home afterwards, but this person doesn't. It's been doing it for years, so...fine. Hopefully, AV software will never be able to initiate an era of Prohibition.

The real question is: can you tell the monitoring group/AV software that this behavior is acceptable for you and your (computing) environment? Can you tell Avast that these programs are allowed to behave that way?

David.

Avast update Dec 3, 2009

I just received an automatic new version update from Avast - now the problem is gone. It must have been a problem with their software.

Problem gone with update Dec 3, 2009

Same here, the issue was solved by the new update...
However, David raises a good point. Whenever Avast finds a supposedly infected piece of sw, it's really difficult to go around it and use the program normally. Yesterday, I had to unable to "resident protection".

Thanks for your answers,
Nicolas

ignore checkbox Dec 3, 2009

I got passed by clicking on "do nothing" in the pop-box that appeared. Still, it was very annoying because the siren kept going off. I disabled the first program that it said had a virus. Then it switched to a program that I know is fine. That's when I started clicking on "do nothing" to contiue working.
