This thread is part of the Translator playground: a place for translators to have fun, to network, to learn, and to hone their translation or linguistic skills. See the announcement here.

Need a quick break from work? In this area translators and language professionals can play games and share material which do not fit in other categories within the Translator playground.

Hi May 23, 2011

Nicole,

Just to let you let you know the Manslater has already been discussed in a previous thread, it generated a debate about sexism, stereotypes, humour, etc.

Have a good evening !

Universal language of women May 23, 2011

Hi Nicole,

Thanks for sharing this. It is hilarious! After watching the video I came to the conclusion that, even though we may speak in different languages, women are united by the "universal language of women" based on the same principles applicable to all languages. It would be fun to add some more examples to the list:

A simple "yes/no" question becomes a "single-no-answer" question eg.

Q: "Do you think I've gained weight?" Translation: This is not a question but rather my way of asking reassurance from your side. The answer should always be "No", in all circumstances and even if I insist several times with a "seriously?I won't get mad if you do".

Will definitively share with the missus, she'll love that.

And about the "I'm fine" or "Nothing's wrong", I once dated a girl that used that sentence a lot. It got really tiring and I gave up and developed the habit of answering "Oh, I'm glad nothing is wrong, I had an impression something was, but I must have been mistaken, silly me!" or something of the sort... it somehow didn't help, go figure!
