Would anyone know who the major UK publishers of serious comics are? (If they publish more historical/literary themed comics for adults, even better)
Thanks in advance for any references.

there is no one comics publishing house that specialises in serious/historical/literary themes. the big dog in UK comics is Titan Books, whose mainstay is teen-and-upwards SF and other "traditional" comics themes, though they also publish the occasional more serious title from time to time.
what does occasionally happen in the UK is that one of the big traditional publishers will branch off into serious comics if they think the title is worthwhile.

examples:
Bloomsbury have published Logicomix, a biographical comic about Bertrand Russell and his work in foundational mathematics.
Jonathan Cape published Tamara Drewe, a newspaper-serialised modern reworking of a Thomas Hardy novel.
Vintage publish the UK editions of Marjane Satrapi.
I'd be interested to hear as well, about other traditional houses who have done the same thing or about smaller comics houses that I haven't mentioned here and may be a good resource. I have two or three German titles in mind myself which I would love to translate --- if I knew who to propose them to.
looking forward to seeing how this discussion develops ▲ Collapse

If you're outside the UK and unable to visit a bookshop here to browse through what's on the shelves, the easiest option is probably to look on amazon.co.uk. Under Books, go to Browse Genres and then Comics & Graphic Novels.
