English to Italian: Young European Designers (edited by Taschen): Introduction
Source text - English How does one become a successful designer, relying 100% on themselves to create original work? And how do you stay original while being involved with design and other designers are constantly influencing you? The design world has changed - forgetting the fact that there is now universal access to programs like Photoshop or Indesign, and that tutorials in basic principles like “rule of threes” and white space can be found anywhere online, there seems to have been a real shift in the way design is taught and briefs are explored in design degree courses.
It used to be that there were rigorous rules to follow in order to create good work, and, correspondingly, assignments followed this approach with imposed rules to develop an understanding of the tension between structure and freedom. Now self-expression and experimentation are being pushed forward, with all the pros and cons that might transpire, and students are encouraged to broaden their approach to projects and develop an inter-disciplinary disposition. Hence an expanded perception of graphic design; you will find that many of the graphic designers featured in this book have assimilated at least one other related creative practice to their field, be it illustration, photography, art direction or typography.
Thanks to thriving style and culture industries coupled with an unique art and design school environment, European capitals from Amsterdam to Zagreb are currently a hotbed of small eclectic graphic studios and teams of designers. There is a desire to create independent practices and an aspiration to cross borders, all the while retaining a certain national flavour. Locality and the value of cultural background are explored, but not exploited. Influences are equally inspired by European vanguard movements, American commerce, contemporary pop culture and the blazing trail set by prolific studios like Graphic Thought Facility, Base or Non Format - multi-cultural practices who have achieved huge commercial success and yet remained adventurous and experimental. Artistry and craft seem to have made a triumphant comeback to the front line, and are being redefined for the next generation. Young Europeans are in a promising position, and if the level of quality work and quality clients is maintained, there is much to look forward to in the years to come.
Italian to Spanish: Giacomino e l’albero di albicocche (racconto inedito)
—¡No!
—¡No!
—¡No!
—¡No!
