Source text - Spanish En su juramento como nuevo Presidente de Paraguay, Horacio Cartes dijo a los jóvenes que no les pedirá paciencia y que, de no cumplir con sus expectativas, “tengan sana rebeldía y hagan lío”.
En su discurso, Cartes prometió luchar frontalmente contra la pobreza y garantizar a todos y todas las mismas oportunidades para el acceso a la salud preventiva, la educación y el trabajo. Las expresiones de Cartes hicieron referencia a la falta de oportunidades para los jóvenes, los protagonistas del cambio en nuestro país; un país que cuenta con riquezas naturales, como agua, energía limpia, tierras cultivables, y que lo que único que necesita son los medios económicos para el desarrollo humano.
Los jóvenes hoy tienen la oportunidad de tomar el discurso del presidente de tal manera que pase de “lo dicho a los hechos”, exigiendo políticas públicas que les permitan acceder a una educación integral de la sexualidad y salud, con enfoque de género y basada en derechos humano; respondiendo a los altos índices de embarazos en adolescentes, las infecciones de transmisión sexual, el VIH y las muerte asociadas al aborto.
El acceso a la educación integral de la sexualidad es una materia pendiente del Estado que no puede postergarse, y que enfrentará grandes desafíos frente a un poder legislativo con actores bastante conservadores y fundamentalistas si se trata de los temas de salud sexual y reproductiva, la sexualidad en general y derechos humanos de las poblaciones LGTBI y un presidente que durante su candidatura demostró abiertamente su oposición hacia la comunidad de la diversidad sexual.
Cartes dio un discurso conciliador y esperanzador como todos los que asumen el poder, e integró su gabinete con personas idóneas en los cargos, más allá de las afiliaciones partidarias; todo ello genera una gran expectativa en la población, especialmente en la población que históricamente ha visto limitadas sus oportunidades respecto a la salud integral, la educación y trabajo.
Es sumamente importante que aunemos esfuerzos todos los actores y movimientos sociales, a modo de vigilar este nuevo proceso gubernamental e implementar un plan de incidencia política con objetivo de lograr el derecho a la salud, a la educación y al trabajo que dé respuesta a las verdaderas necesidades de la población LGTBI, a los y las adolescentes y jóvenes paraguayos, pasando del discurso a la acción.
Desde algunas organizaciones de sociedad civil hemos venido preparando una agenda de trabajo conjunta hacia la incidencia política y el advocacy, que buscará garantizar la respuesta al VIH, la protección de los derechos humanos de las personas LGTBI y la educación sexual integral. Que no quepa duda que tendremos sana rebeldía y haremos lío.
Translation - English New president of Paraguay Horacio Cartes says the country’s youth will not have to wait for change and they should “maintain a healthy level of rebellion and kick up a fuss” if he does not live up to their expectations.
During his inaugural speech on 15 August, Cartes promised to wage war on poverty and to guarantee equal opportunities for every man and woman in terms of access to healthcare, education and work. He also referred to the lack of opportunities for young people, who are the drivers of change in a country rich in natural resources like water, clean energy, and fertile soils, and one in which all that is needed to improve the quality of life of the citizens is to adjust economic policies.
Today, the youth of Paraguay have the opportunity to take the president’s words to heart and move from words to actions, demanding public policies that will give them access to a comprehensive educational curriculum on sexuality and health. These demands should address the issues of high rates of teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, such as HIV, and abortion-related deaths.
Access to comprehensive sexual health education is a pending issue for the state that cannot be postponed. It’s also one that will no doubt face huge challenges from a legislative body whose members are for the most part conservative and fundamentalist when it comes to sexuality and sexual health, including human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersexed (LGBTI) communities.
Activists must join forces
Cartes gave a conciliatory speech, full of hope, like all inaugural speeches, and has filled his cabinet with the people best suited to the various roles, regardless of their party politics. All of this creates high expectations, particularly within communities which have historically had limited opportunities in terms of their access to comprehensive healthcare, education and work.
However, the president openly demonstrated his opposition to the sexually diverse community during his candidature. It is crucially important that all social movements and activists join forces to keep an eye on this new governmental process and carry forward a political advocacy plan. We must lobby for the rights to healthcare, to education and work opportunities that answer to the real needs of the LGBTI population and of the young men and women of Paraguay, and we must move from words to action.
Some of us involved in non-governmental organisations have been putting together an agenda for collective work in political lobbying and advocacy, which will seek to guarantee a response to HIV, protection of the human rights of LGBTI people and comprehensive sexual health education. Let there be no doubt about it: we will maintain a healthy level of rebellion, and we will make a fuss.

En Extremo Oriente, la ideografía original se desarrolló por medio de la adaptación de una serie de caracteres que se vinculan, cada uno por separado, a un elemento del pensamiento. Esto hace posible que los asiáticos instruidos puedan comprenderse por escrito, a pesar de que, cuando hablan idiomas diferentes, no pueden entenderse con palabras.
Una escritura como ésta no es práctica en la vida corriente, pero es innegable que tiene muchas ventajas desde el punto de vista filosófico, pues obliga a pensar haciendo abstracción de la palabra. Las palabras permiten hablar volublemente, se pronuncian sin necesidad de que el espíritu se represente lo que expresan los sonidos. Se ha dicho que la palabra le fue dada al hombre para que pudiera disimular su pensamiento. Retengamos más bien el hecho de que el hombre habla para evitar el pensamiento: hablamos mucho para no decir nada.
Estos inconvenientes de la palabra no han pasado por alto a los pensadores serios, que siempre se han negado a dejarse aturdir por el ruido de las palabras. Persuadidos de que la meditación instruye al hombre en las cosas que más le interesan, han fundado las Escuelas de Silencio. En ellas el discípulo no es aleccionado; no recibe ninguna predicación: es puesto en presencia de sí mismo y de los espectáculos puros. Es posible que las cosas, las imágenes y los signos no le sugieran nada; espíritu perezoso, no se siente estimulado a pensar. Translation - English Primitive writing was based on signs that evoke ideas, like our ciphers, which can be read in any language and will always preserve the same meaning. The original ideography of letters, in the Far East, was developed by means of the adaptation of a series of characters, each of which links to an element of thought. This makes it possible for well-educated Asians to understand one another in writing, despite the fact that when they speak different languages they cannot understand one another in words.
There is no writing of this kind still in use in the present day, but it undeniably has many advantages from the philosophical perspective, as it obliges one to think without using words. Words allow one to speak volubly, but the spirit does not necessarily represent the same thing as that expressed by the sounds that are pronounced. It has been said that words were given to mankind so that he could conceal his thoughts. Let us instead hold onto the fact that men speak to avoid thinking: we talk a lot in order to say nothing.
These disadvantages of the spoken and written word have not gone unheeded by the great thinkers, who have always refused to let themselves be distracted by the white noise of words. Convinced that the practice of meditation teaches mankind those things of the greatest interest to us, they founded the Schools of Silence. At these schools a disciple is not lectured; he receives no preaching or preconceived wisdom; he is simply put in the presence of his own self and of the pure displays of being. It is possible that the things, the symbols and the signs will not arouse any suggestion in him; a lazy spirit is not easily stimulated into thought. Sin fechas, sin nada más. Era una lápida de piedra, no de mármol. Completamente plana sobre la tierra, y sin cruz.
Pero yo tenía entonces diecisiete años y, a esa edad, el descubrimiento de una lápida tan extraña da mucho de sí. O yo lo estiré tanto, que llegué a creer que se trataba poco menos que del hallazgo más importante de mi vida. Tal vez lo fue, una especie de oráculo sobre mi destino.
No está en el cementerio de mi pueblo, sino en el de un pueblo cercano, al que fui con mis padres para el entierro de un pariente. Me empeñé en acompañarlos. Insistí mucho: iban a enterrar a un hombre, el chache Alfonso, al que llevaba tres años deseando ver muerto, desde los catorce.
- Con lo arisca que has sido siempre con él y ¿ahora resulta que quieres acudir a su entierro? Algo te traes tú entre manos - dijo mi padre cuando estábamos a punto de salir.
El mero hecho de que mi padre expresara en voz alta una sospecha la convertía inmediatamente en advertencia: «Más vale que se quede en eso, en sospecha». Pero la frase que yo oía latir dentro de él no era en realidad ésa, tan escueta; a mí me divertía imaginarla con más vuelo: «Espero por tu bien que abras las manos en un descuido mío y dejes caer el puñado de intenciones que hayas reunido en ellas, de manera que yo, al ver que las mueves vacías delante de mí - cinco lobitos, como cuando eras pequeña, nunca debiste crecer, puñetera - , piense que he pensado mal».
Había tenido que ver a ese hombre una vez al año, todos los años, para la feria, cuando la corrida. Venía siempre la víspera para sacar su entrada, y se quedaba a dormir ese día y al siguiente. Olía a carrasco - porque no todos los pinos huelen igual - , a pino carrasco aserrándose. Así huele la virilidad cuando no se lava, cuando se retestina y repercute.
Tenía la mano temblorosa y caliente. Y pespunteado de negro el final de todas las uñas. Tenía pajizas las del índice y del corazón, por apurar las colillas. Y, como la gota de caldo del cocido, grasa y calentuza, que rebosa el labio y escurre por la barbilla de un viejo en el asilo de las monjas, así tomaba él mi barbilla y escurría por toda ella, desde el borde de mi labio, su dedo gordo.

There were no dates, nothing else. The tombstone was plain stone, not marble. It was completely flat and level with the ground, with no cross.
But I was seventeen years old then, and at that age the discovery of such an unusual gravestone held endless possibilities. Or else I built it up so much in my mind that I came to believe it was nothing less than the most important discovery of my life. And perhaps it was, a kind of oracle of my future destiny.
It is not in the local cemetery, but in that of a nearby town, where I went with my parents to a relative’s funeral. I insisted on going with them. I made a big fuss about it; they were going to bury a man, uncle Alfonso, whom I had been longing to see dead for three years, ever since I was fourteen.
“You’ve always been so stand-offish with him and now suddenly you want to come to his funeral? You, missy, are up to something”, said my father as we were about to leave.
The mere fact that my father expressed a suspicion out loud immediately made it into a warning: ‘You had better make sure this remains a suspicion and nothing more’. But the lurking warning that I heard, beating a rhythm inside his head, was not that, not in such plain and simple words. I liked to imagine it more fleshed out: ‘I hope for your own good that when I’m not looking you drop that fistful of intentions that you’ve been hiding behind your back, so that when I see you waving your empty hands in front of me – five little piggies, just like when you were little, you never should have grown up, dammit – I think that I was mistaken.’
I had had to see that man once a year, every year, for the festival, when the bullfighting was on. He always arrived the night before to get his ticket, and would stay over that night and the following night. He smelt of pine – evergreen, because not all pine trees smell the same – of Aleppo pine, when it is sawn through. Men smell like that when they don’t wash, when the dirt is ground in and the odour is unmistakable.
His hand was warm and trembling. And it was peppered with black stitches of dirt under all his fingernails. The nails of the index and middle finger were the colour of straw, from smoking cigarettes right down to the butt. And like a drop of broth from the stew, greasy and steaming, that spills over the lip and slides down the chin of an old man in a home run by nuns, he would take my chin and slide his thumb down over it, starting from the edge of my lip.

Source text - Spanish Nadie vendría a encontrarme, era preciso que nadie tuviera noticia de mi viaje, ni siquiera los más leales entre los supervivientes, ni el hombre a quien se le ordenó que guardara una pistola en la consigna de la estación de Atocha y que dejara la llave en un bar cuyo nombre me fue confiado en un papel con instrucciones y horarios que en seguida rompí por costumbre, por obediencia a la ficción que me guiaba como un impulso que suspende las leyes de la gravedad y de la verosimilitud, pues desde que acepté viajar a Madrid yo era un lento fantasma que fingía que iba a matar a un hombre y se internaba en la mentira como en una selva de espejismos.
El avión perdía altura con bruscos espasmos de catástrofe, y la niebla blanca alternativamente nos envolvía y se rasgaba dejando ver en lo más hondo un paisaje ocre de desiertos. Oí el chasquido de los cinturones de seguridad, se encendieron los indicadores de peligro, el ala derecha del avión se inclinaba casi rozando agrios picachos de colinas, y yo sentí en el vacío del estómago que algo irreparable me iba a suceder, la rápida agonía imaginada de los que mueren en el interior de un avión, la claustrofobia de aire enrarecido y dolor de agujas en los tímpanos que una noche de muchos años atrás me había paralizado y casi me había enloquecido cuando volaba sobre la oscuridad de los bosques de Francia y el piloto se quitó los cascos y se volvió para decirme que nos había alcanzado la metralla de los antiaéreos.
Mirando la niebla que abolía al otro lado de las ventanillas ovales el espacio y el tiempo de los vivos, recordé los haces oblicuos de los reflectores, el estrépito irregular de las hélices, la perentoria sensación de estar a punto de morir, en mitad de la nada, de desvanecerme sin residuos en la estela roja de un avión incendiado. Pero el avión ya rebotaba sobre la pista y se estremecía como arrebatado por una velocidad incontenible, y el lugar de la niebla lo ocupaban vertiginosos descampados de asfalto cruzados por destellos azules. Breves rachas de llovizna y granizo asolaban los espacios horizontales del aeropuerto. No había nadie y yo sabía que nadie iba a venir, y en torno mío se adensaba envolviéndome una embriaguez de voces, de pasos y de rostros, una sensación de abandono y peligro. The aeroplane was losing height in a series of sudden spasms that gave the impression of catastrophe, and the white fog alternately enveloping us and tearing apart to allow glimpses of an ochre-coloured desert landscape, far below. I heard the click of seatbelts fastening, the warning lights came on, the right hand wing of the plane tilted down, almost scraping the uneven peaks of the hills below, and I sensed in the empty pit of my stomach that something irredeemable was going to happen to me. The swift imagined agony of those who die inside an aeroplane, the claustrophobia of recycled air and the pins and needles in the eardrums which had paralyzed me one night, many years before, and which had almost driven me mad when I was flying over the dark woods of France and the pilot took off his headphones and turned around to tell me that we had been hit by flak from the anti-aircraft guns.
Looking out at the fog on the other side of the little oval windows, that blocked out the sense of time and space of the living world, I remembered the slanting beams of the searchlights, the irregular clatter of the propellers, the peremptory sensation of being about to die in the middle of nowhere, evaporating without a trace in the glowing red slipstream of a blazing aircraft. But the plane was already bouncing along the runway, shuddering as if carried along by an uncontrollable speed, and in place of the fog there were dizzying expanses of asphalt, criss-crossed by strips of blue landing lights. Short bursts of drizzle and hail battered down upon all the airport’s horizontal surfaces. There was no one there and I knew that no one was going to come, and all around me a swirling cloud of voices, footsteps and faces, a feeling of abandonment and danger, grew denser and denser until it threatened to swallow me up. But I went on pretending to myself that it was not true that I had come here to kill a man, and at the same time calculating every one of the steps leading to the execution of the man who was waiting for me, dying of loneliness and fear, shivering with cold, awaiting the arrival of a messenger, his saviour, his executioner.

Source text - Spanish El estío ofrecía una visión hermosa de los campos de Ávila. Los trigos segados desplegaban un intenso color ocre en los llanos que, fustigados por el sol, enviaban a la ciudad un calor denso y seco a mediodía. Pero al pie del cerro donde se alza la muralla, junto a la enmarañada fronda de las riberas del río, los huertos se mostraban muy verdes, repletos de árboles frutales con ciruelas en sazón y nogales de espesas copas. La ciudad se veía a lo lejos, sobre su loma, amodorrada por la canícula.
Regresábamos de una feliz jornada de caza. Don Bricio cabalgaba sobre un enorme corcel y oteaba el horizonte con melancólica mirada. Las barbazas grises le caían luengas sobre el pecho y el cabello grasiento, sudoroso, le brotaba por debajo del gorro de tafilete, en la nuca. Vestía sólo el camisón claro que solía llevar siempre bajo los hábitos. Así, sin la capa y la túnica, se asemejaba a un campesino robusto que iba a sus labores, de no haber sido por el águila real que llevaba en el puño y que le otorgaba un aire majestuoso.
A mi vez, portaba yo amarrado al guante un bello azor que también pertenecía a mi amo, aunque hacía uso de él a mi antojo, como si fuera propio. También cabalgaba yo sobre buena montura: la yegua alazana recién domada que el arcediano me regaló nada más iniciarse nuestras jornadas de caza. Me sentía como un señor, henchido de orgullo por dedicarme a menesteres tan nobles y propios de gentes de buena cuna. Pues jamás había visto ni oído contar que hombres de mi familia y condición se hubieran atrevido a ejercer la altanería. La vida se me iba poniendo cada vez más regalada.
Delante iban los perros zigzagueando aún para no perder ni un palmo de terreno en su oficio de husmear, a pesar de llevar las lenguas casi arrastrando por los suelos, de la mucha faena que habían tenido desde la madrugada. De su buena casta para levantar piezas, y del bien hacer de las aves de presa, se había merecido el premio de lograr las seis liebres y las dos docenas de perdices que portaban detrás de nosotros los lacayos, a más de un pato y dos becadas.
Por tan copiosa y divertida jornada, iba yo feliz y, nada más sentirme próximo a los muros de Ávila, me puse a cantar alegre como un jilguero a voz en cuello.
- ¡Calla, insensato! – me regañó Don Bricio -. ¿No ves que aún no hemos terminado la caza?
- Si estamos a las puertas de Ávila. ¿Aquí en los huertos va a haber caza? – repliqué, pues andábamos ya por entre los nogales y ciruelos.

The shorn fields of wheat unfurled an intense ochre colour over the sun-lashed plains which sent a dense, dry heat rolling towards the city at midday. But at the foot of the hill where the city walls rise up, next to the tangled foliage of the river’s banks, the orchards were very green, full of fruit trees laden with ripe plums and walnut trees with thick leafy crowns. The city on its hillock could be seen from afar, drowsy under the onslaught of midsummer heat.
We were returning from a happy day’s hunting. Don Bricio bestrode an enormous charger, scanning the horizon with a melancholy eye. Long grey tendrils of beard fell loose upon his chest and greasy, sweaty hair sprouted from beneath the wide brim of his leather hat, falling on his nape. He wore only the light-coloured shirt that he used always to wear under his habit. Dressed like this, without the cape and tunic, he resembled a sturdy peasant on his way to work in the fields, had it not been for the golden eagle he carried on his fist and which bestowed a majestic air upon him.
For my part, I was carrying a fine goshawk leashed to my glove which also belonged to my lord and master, although I made use of the bird as I pleased, as if it were my own. I also rode upon a fine mount: the sorrel mare, recently broken in, that the archdeacon had given me no sooner had our hunting days commenced. I felt like a lord, puffed up with pride at such noble doings, so fitting of those of high birth. For I had never seen nor heard tell of men of my family and station having had the nerve to practice falconry. Life was becoming ever more pleasant and easy for me.
Ahead, the dogs were still zigzagging, intent on not missing a single inch of ground in their scenting mission, despite their tongues hanging almost to the ground after the hard work they had had since daybreak. Thanks to the good stock of these hounds, bred for drawing out quarry, and the fine work of the birds of prey, our prize - the six hares and two dozen partridge, as well as a duck and two woodcocks, all carried by the footmen who brought up the rear - was well deserved.
Having had such an enjoyable day of abundance, I for one was more than content, and as soon as I knew us to be near the walls of Avila, I began to sing joyfully at the top of my lungs like a lark.
“Quiet, you fool!” Don Bricio admonished. “Can’t you see we haven’t yet finished the hunt?”
“But we are at the gates of Avila. You think there will be game here in the orchards?” I replied, for we were already passing among the walnut and plum trees.
