The president needs to do more to tackle the “Brazil cost”

WRITING about the Brazil of a century ago, Warren Dean, an economic historian, noted that the country’s foreign trade “appears to have been limited to commodities in which overwhelming comparative advantage offset high costs of production and commercialisation and high internal taxes.” Both government and private sector paid
“little attention to...competitiveness,” he added.
Those words ring uncannily true of the Brazil of recent years. For much of the past decade the country enjoyed faster growth because of China’s demand for its iron ore, soya beans and oil, and because higher wages and newly available credit boosted the purchasing power of tens of millions of Brazilians. But now the economy has stalled. Having slashed interest rates, intervened to weaken an overvalued currency and offered tax breaks and cheap loans to favoured sectors, officials insist that GDP will grow by 4.5% next year. In 2008, when the world economy tanked, the government engineered a quick recovery by stimulating demand. But now its lever-pulling seems to be having less effect. That is partly because of global economic gloom, and partly because Brazil’s consumers, like those elsewhere, are paying back debts. But it also reflects the harsh
truth that Brazil has become a wildly expensive place in which to invest or manufacture. It is cheaper to import steel made in South Korea from Brazilian iron ore than to buy it locally, complains Carlos Ghosn, the boss of Renault-Nissan.
There are many reasons for this. Wages have risen without regard for stagnant productivity. Poor infrastructure adds to firms’ costs. But the remorseless expansion of the state is also to blame. Taxes take around 36% of GDP, a European-sized chunk. But Brazilians get nothing like European public services in return. Almost half of them lack sewerage connections. Although public investment has risen, it remains paltry. A disproportionate share of tax revenues is gobbled up by insiders. Under Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former trade-union leader who was president between 2003 and 2010, the public-sector wage bill more than doubled in nominal terms, whereas inflation was less than 50%. Lula also pushed up both the minimum wage and pensions much faster than inflation.

En 2008, cuando se derrumbó la economía mundial, el gobierno quiso acelerar la recuperación estimulando la demanda. Sin embargo, ahora su maniobra parece estar siendo menos efectiva. The White House released budget figures yesterday indicating that the new Medicare prescription drug benefit will cost more than $1.2 trillion in the coming decade, a much higher price tag than President Bush suggested when he narrowly won passage of the law in late 2003.
The projections represent the most complete picture to date of how much the program will cost after it begins next year. The expense of the new drug benefit has been a source of much controversy since the day Congress approved it, with Democrats and some Republicans complaining that the White House has consistently low-balled
the expected cost to the government.
As recently as September, Medicare chief Mark B. McClellan said the new drug package would cost $534 billion over 10 years. Last night, he acknowledged that the cumulative cost of the program between 2006 and 2015 will reach $1.2 trillion, but he cited several major savings and offsets that he said will reduce the federal government's
bottom-line cost to $720 billion.
The disclosure prompted new criticism by Democrats about the administration's long-term budget estimates. It also showed that Medicare, the national medical insurance program for seniors, may pose a far more serious budgetary problem in the coming decade than concerns about the solvency of Social Security.
At a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) taunted Treasury Secretary John W. Snow about the rhetorical discrepancies.
"If you're looking for a crisis, I would suggest you look at a crisis that was self-made in just last year, because the crisis exists in what's happened to Medicare by weighing it down," Emanuel said. "Those of us who told you it was going to cost twice as much
were right."
At the recent confirmation hearing of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, Senate Budget Committee Chairman Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) pressed the administration to hold down the cost of the prescription drug program to the $400 billion that Bush had originally promised.

La Casa Blanca publicó ayer cifras presupuestarias que indican que el nuevo plan de cobertura para medicamentos con receta de Medicare supondrá un gasto de más de 1,2 billones de dólares a lo largo de la próxima década, una cantidad mucho mayor que la expresada por el presidente Bush cuando consiguió aprobar por poco la ley a finales de 2003.
Este pronóstico representa la aproximación más fiable hasta la fecha de cuánto costará el programa, que se pondrá en marcha el año que viene. Dicho coste ha sido motivo de gran controversia desde el día en que la ley fue aprobada por el Congreso, y los demócratas y algunos republicanos se han quejado de que la Casa Blanca había subestimado sistemáticamente la cantidad que el gobierno esperaba gastar.

DAD’S ZONE
With all the focus on the expectant mother and the baby, it is easy to overlook the father and his role in pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. If you’re a father, you have some important roles to play the minute your partner gets pregnant: head coach, counselor and overall coordinator!
A Little TLC for Dad
It’s official. You’re pregnant. The pink line on the pregnancy test confirmed it and now the doctor has given his verdict as well. Both your parents and inlaws are hovering around your wife ready to fetch, pet and pretty much roll over when she asks them to – after all, she is carrying their grandchild. But in all this attention and pampering of Mom you as Dad may feel a little put out. This is your child as well and your pregnancy as well as baby is half yours, despite the fact that unfortunately due to the make-up of nature, your body is not equipped to go through a pregnancy.
Your role as Dad is incredibly important – you are Mom’s spokesperson, support system, head coach, masseuse and back up. You should be as involved in this pregnancy as you want to be. If you feel like going for every appointment, reading all the information you can get your hands on and knitting your baby’s receiving blanket – you should. If you want to be in the labour room, cut the cord and clean your baby up for the first time, again, you should. If you don’t want to be involved in a big way because you are nervous or scared, you should talk about it to your partner and decide how you want to go about things.
Remember, many men only connect with Fatherhood when they have had some time with their babies, rather than when they find out they are pregnant. Either way, these are some things you should start thinking about.
Maybe you are a practical Dad who is sorting out their college fund and collecting assembly instructions for products from now itself or maybe you are an emotional Dad who cried during the first scan. Your life is changing too – you now have to start thinking about saving money, creating space for your little one in your home and your changing lifestyle. So Dad, this is an ode to you – to remind you that you are equally important in this process of pregnancy and
parenting.
Pregnancy support system
When pregnancy symptoms hit hard and the nausea, mood swings and indigestion take over, it is up to you to assure your partner that your beloved baby will be worth it. You need to be patient and loving and may have to rush out at nights to hunt for that hard-to-get food item that hits high on the craving list. You’ll need to help combat unwanted advice and be the spokesperson for your partner when she cannot bear to fight everyone off. It is you who has to
whisk her off for that much needed weekend break when she can’t take it any longer.
Your life is changing too
Being on the brink of fatherhood may stress you out with all the additional responsibilities coming your way. Men tend to look at the big picture - an extra mouth to feed, high educational expenses, that dream wedding to pay for – it’s not easy. Not to mention the drastic change in lifestyle; now it will be your baby and not social engagements that keep you up all night. Your partner and you
will now probably only have a few snatched moments alone together and recreational time will include a baby who needs a whole lot of time and attention.
Sharing the birthing experience
Many men feel helpless once their partners go into labour. But there are many things you can do in your supporting role. You can stay with her through part of the labour or till the end. Your patient support and encouragement could be invaluable. Go over your birth plan with your partner and know what she wants when she is in there. This will help you advocate her choices once you are in
the labour room and when she may not be in a position to speak her mind. You can help her with breathing exercises and massage techniques learnt in your childbirth education class. You can also let her use you for support in certain positions during labour, holding her up through labour with words of encouragement and support. Watch your baby’s actions and expressions soon after delivery. Your spouse will love to hear it over and over again later.
Being a Dad
You can spend time bonding with your child once you come home from work. Helping your partner with bottle-feeds, bathing and changing those dirty nappies/diapers gives her a break and allows you your own one-on-one bonding time with your baby. Babies find their father’s voices soothing because it is a familiar sound they have been hearing while inside the womb. Men are also known to be better at burping because their hands are firmer and stronger.There is plenty that you can do – you are equally your baby’s parent and it’s up to you to live up to that responsibility and enjoy that privilege.
From Lad to Dad: Making the Transition
From the minute you find out you’re pregnant, the differences between Moms and Dads become apparent. Moms worry about all the little things that get you through the day; is baby getting enough to eat, are they moving enough, am I connecting enough with baby. Whereas Dads tend to look at the bigger picture.
Where are we going to put this baby, are we financially able to provide for hospital bills, schooling, college and weddings!
Men in general, like to be in control of things and when they are on the onset of fatherhood, they may realize that not everything is within their control.
Pregnancy is unpredictable and many men can’t fathom what has happened to their rational, reasonable partners when the hormones take over. Suddenly, these partners become even more precious because they are carrying their child, their future inside them. Some men feel guilty as they feel they are putting their partners through the ups and downs of pregnancy and others feel extreme
pride at their partners’ coping powers.
Sometimes, this period of pregnancy and new parenthood can make men feel very left out. After being the center of their partner’s worlds, they suddenly feel neglected and unloved as the new mommy is too busy dealing with her new responsibilities and all the changes that come with it to put aside time with you.
The main thing to remember is that everything you are feeling at this point, is absolutely normal. You may not be the one who is pregnant but this pregnancy affects your life as much as it does your partner. Here are some things you can do to make this transition easier:
1. Allow yourself some time to adjust to these new changes and the feelings that come with them.
2. Be a part of the pregnancy in whatever way you want or can; touch your baby, talk to your baby, help with bathing, nappy changing or putting your baby to bed.
3. Come to terms with the fact that you don’t need to make all decisions now or have an entire college fund ready by the time your baby arrives; you will eventually get things sorted so go with the flow and enjoy the moments before they pass
4. Talk to your partner. Share with them how you feel with all these new changes. Its not all about her and trust us, she will be grateful that you need her support as well.
Dad’s Role in Pregnancy
So you can’t physically carry your baby in your belly the way your wife can, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be an active participant in the pregnancy anyway. Here are a few things you can do to feel ‘in sync’ with your wife and baby from conception time….
1. Give massages when required and a tip is that they are required ALL the time!
2. Paint her toenails because she can’t see them…
3. Go to all the appointments, scans and checkups with her to be a part of the process
4. Read up on Pregnancy and Parenting related information. Forewarned is forearmed!
5. Attend Childbirth Education classes so you are equipped to be her coach in labour
6. Get the camera (both video and still) in gear so you can catch all the action for your memories
7. Be her knight in shining armour – ward off all negativity from parents, in- laws and everybody else
8. Take wifey on a romantic holiday for two – an ode to your past and a promise for tomorrow
9. Run out in the middle of the night and search for whatever she’s craving for (you’ll earn serious brownie points)
10. Research the nursery you are putting together – she doesn’t want the details of how to put what together. She just wants it and wants it done. Do it.
11. Indulge her – she’s carrying your baby inside her. That’s huge responsibility
12. Go for those last wild nights out with your friends – the times are gonna change
13. Start saving money – school, college and weddings are not too far away!
14. Wear a belly bump and walk around with it on for a day if you REALLY want to experience what she’s going through
Dad’s Role In The Labour Room
• Decide at the onset if being in the labour room is something you want. Some fathers want to be a part of everything and yet others feel queasy, helpless and may not even be able to see their partners in that light. Decide what is best for you.
• Attend all childbirth classes with your partner beforehand so you know all breathing, visualization and massage techniques. Also so that you know what to expect in labour and in the delivery room
• Go over your birth plan with your partner so that you understand her thought process and what she wants out of the labour and delivery experience. This way you can advocate her choices when she is busy in the birthing process
• Create a safe environment for Mom; this could be anything from playing the right music to having the people she wants to be present
• Be the spokesperson for Mom in the labour room as she may not be able to communicate her own needs/wants while in the labour room
• Communicate with Mom during labour ensuring all her needs and wants are met but respect that there might be times she may not want to talk. In that case, learn how to support her best without using words – this could be through massage, stroking or helping with breathing
• Learn how to massage her for certain pains and where in order to be a constructive help
• Understand that labour cannot be solved; it needs to be experienced for what it is so keep strong and positive as your vibes will carry through to her
• It’s ok to just be there – nothing else may be required and as a man you need to learn to accept this
• Cut the cord if you want and can
• Help to clean up baby and mom – it lends to the bonding experience
• Labour and birth can be an exhausting, stressful time but remember to enjoy the first few moments with your new family….they never come back!
Bond With Your Baby, Dad
Once all the excitement over the new arrival dies down, in most households across India, there’s just one person on the job of parent and that’s the mom.
Don’t get us wrong – most dads do show up but it’s for the cute little camera moments. You might realize that you are not just the primary parent but the sole parent!
But don’t fret; dads are more parenting-conscious these days. They have browsed baby websites and checked out the baby sections of stores. That may not seem like much, but considering they can’t really breastfeed or put your baby to sleep the way you do, it’s a good start.
If you’re a dad, here are some great ways to get involved:
• If your baby uses a feeding bottle or sipper, spend time to give it to them.
• You could go along with your wife to the store and take care of the child while she shops. It will help you bond, and let her concentrate on what she needs.
• Take the occasional Saturday off and watch the baby while she does her own thing, whatever it is.
• Feed the baby yourself whenever you are at home, however messy it gets.
• Be a part of baby’s bedtime routine. Make it a point to read at least one book a day to the baby or sing at least one song.
• Use a sling/baby carrier to carry baby around.
• Give baby a bath whenever you can.
• Read up on parenting issues so that you understand more about the little one in the house.
Things Dads Are Better At Than Moms!
Moms may think they are better at everything than you Dads but don’t let them get away with it…here is a list of things you can do better than her….
1. Burping Baby because you hands are much bigger than Mom’s and so you will manage to get burps out a lot faster than she can
2. Carrying baby around in a sling because you will probably take longer to get tired than Mom will
3. Putting baby to bed because you are cuddlier and your strong arms have more rocking power!
4. Feeding baby with a bottle because when Moms try it, babies can smell the breast milk on them and so will refuse the bottle
5. Feeding toddlers because you don’t do it regularly and so you have more patience!
6. Saying No because you’re perceived to be ‘head of the household’ and your word has power! (Even if you listen to everything Mom says!)
7. Being popular because she has to be the disciplinarian on a day to day basis whereas you get to take them for ice creams, allow extra TV viewing and slip in a trip to the toyshop every now and then!
8. Reasoning with the kids because Moms tend to be emotional and bring that into disagreements whereas you are better at putting together logical arguments to help them see your point of view
9. Teaching them how to ride a bike, fly a kite, hit a ball and shoot some hoops
10. You’re the biggest, strongest, most powerful man in the eyes of your son –nothing less than a superhero…
11. You’re the biggest, strongest, handsomest man in the eyes of your daughter…need we say more?!
Remember, there is no such thing as a perfect dad or a perfect mom. You’re both just two human beings trying really hard to do your best. So do your best, and you’re on the right track!

No obstante, en toda esta vorágine de atención y cuidados para mamá, puede que como padre te sientas un poco desplazado. Se trata también de tu hijo y de tu embarazo, ya que el bebé es igualmente tuyo, a pesar de que, por desgracia, debido a los caprichos de la naturaleza, tu cuerpo no esté diseñado para gestar.
Tu papel como padre es de vital importancia: eres el portavoz, soporte vital, entrenador, masajista y respaldo de la madre. Debes involucrarte en este embarazo cuanto quieras: tanto si te apetece ir a todas las citas con el médico, leer toda la información que caiga en tus manos o tejer la manta en la que recibirás a tu bebé, como si quieres estar presente en el paritorio, cortar el cordón umbilical y lavar al bebé por primera vez, estás en tu derecho. Si no quieres involucrarte totalmente porque te estresa o te asusta, deberías hablar del tema con tu pareja y decidir cómo vais a hacer las cosas. Recuerda que muchos hombres sólo asimilan la paternidad cuando han pasado algo de tiempo con sus bebés, y no justo cuando se enteran de que su pareja está embarazada. De cualquier modo, hay algunas cosas que deberías empezar a plantearte.
Tal vez seas un papá práctico, de los que abren una cuenta de ahorros para la universidad y acumulan instrucciones de montaje desde el primer momento, o quizá seas del tipo emocional, de los que lloran durante la primera ecografía. Tu vida también está cambiando: ahora tienes que preocuparte de ahorrar dinero, crear espacio en casa para tu hijito y cambiar tu estilo de vida. Así que, papá, te dedicamos estas páginas para recordarte que eres igual de importante en el proceso de embarazo y crianza.
Sistema de soporte vital durante el embarazo
Cuando los síntomas del embarazo golpean con fuerza y las náuseas, cambios de humor e indigestiones toman el control, depende de ti hacer ver a tu pareja que cuando nazca vuestro querido bebé habrá merecido la pena. Tienes que ser paciente y cariñoso, ya que es posible que tengas que salir corriendo por las noches a la caza de ese aperitivo tan difícil de encontrar y que tiene tanto éxito en su lista de antojos. Tendrás que ayudar a mantener a raya a quienes dan consejos sin que se les hayan pedido y ser el portavoz de tu pareja cuando no tenga fuerzas para librarse de todo el mundo. Eres tú quien tiene que llevársela como un rayo a pasar ese fin de semana de descanso que tanto necesita cuando no pueda aguantar más.
Tu vida también está cambiando
Estar al borde de la paternidad puede estresarte debido a las responsabilidades añadidas que vas a tener que afrontar. Los hombres tienden a hacerse una idea general: una boca más que alimentar, grandes gastos en la educación, pagar la boda de sus sueños. No es fácil. Sin mencionar lo drástico que es el cambio de estilo de vida; a partir de ahora será tu bebé y no tu vida social lo que te mantendrá despierto toda la noche. Ahora es probable que tu pareja y tú tan sólo podáis arañar unos pocos momentos de intimidad juntos y tendréis que compartir el tiempo de ocio con un bebé que necesita atención a tiempo completo.
Compartir la experiencia del parto
Muchos hombres se sienten indefensos una vez sus parejas entran al paritorio, pero hay muchas cosas que puedes hacer como ayudante. Puedes quedarte con ella durante una parte del parto o hasta el final. Tu apoyo y aliento constantes podrían ser de un valor inestimable. Repasa tu plan para el parto con tu pareja y sé consciente de lo que pueda necesitar cuando esté en la sala. Esto te ayudará a ser portavoz de sus necesidades una vez estéis en el paritorio, en caso de que ella no esté en condiciones de expresarse. Puedes ayudarla con los ejercicios de respiración y técnicas de masaje que aprendisteis en el curso de preparación al parto. También puedes dejar que apoye moralmente en ti en situaciones concretas durante el parto, animándola mientras tanto con palabras estimulantes y alentadoras. Mira los movimientos y expresiones de tu bebé en cuanto nazca, a tu cónyuge le encantará que se lo cuentes después una y otra vez.
Ser papá
Puedes dedicar tiempo a crear vínculos con tu hijo cuando llegues a casa después de trabajar. Ayudar a tu pareja a darle el biberón, bañarlo y cambiarle los pañales sucios le dará un respiro y te dará ocasión de establecer lazos afectivos con tu bebé, cara a cara. Los bebés encuentran relajante la voz de su padre porque es un sonido familiar que han estado escuchando mientras estaban dentro del útero. De los hombres se sabe también que hacen expulsar mejor los gases a los bebés porque sus manos son más firmes y fuertes. Hay muchas cosas que puedes hacer: tú eres el progenitor de tu bebé al igual que su madre y depende de ti estar a la altura de esa responsabilidad y disfrutar de ese privilegio.
De chaval a padre: adaptarse al cambio
Desde el momento en que te enteras de que estáis embarazados empiezan a hacerse patentes las diferencias entre los papás y las mamás. Las mamás se preocupan casi todo el tiempo de los pequeños detalles del día a día: «¿Le estaré dando de comer lo suficiente al bebé? ¿Se mueve tanto como debería? ¿Estoy conectando lo bastante con él?». Mientras, los papás tienden a hacerse una idea más general: «¿Tenemos sitio en esta casa para el bebé? ¿Podemos permitirnos pagar la sanidad, el colegio y la universidad? ¿¡Y la boda!?».
En general, a los hombres les gusta tenerlo todo controlado y cuando se encuentran en el comienzo de la paternidad, es posible que se den cuenta de que no todo está bajo su control. El embarazo es impredecible y muchos hombres no llegan a entender qué ocurre con la capacidad de razonamiento y la sensatez de sus parejas cuando las hormonas las controlan. De repente, esas parejas se vuelven personas todavía más preciadas porque llevan dentro de sí a su hijo, el futuro de los dos. Algunos hombres se sienten culpables porque creen que están obligando a sus parejas a sufrir los altibajos del embarazo y otros viven completamente orgullosos de ellas por su resistencia.
A veces, el periodo de embarazo y el comienzo de la paternidad pueden hacer que los hombres se sientan muy excluidos. Después de haber sido el centro del universo para sus parejas, de repente se sienten abandonados y menospreciados, al estar la futura mamá demasiado ocupada lidiando con sus nuevas responsabilidades y todos los cambios que conllevan, y prescindir del tiempo que pasa contigo. Lo primero que hay que recordar es que todo lo que sientes en ese momento es totalmente normal. Puede que no seas el que está embarazado pero su embarazo afecta a tu vida tanto como a la suya. Estas son algunas de las cosas que puedes hacer para sobrellevar esta transición:
1. Tómate algún tiempo para adaptarte a estos nuevos cambios y los sentimientos que generan.
2. Involúcrate en el embarazo de la forma que quieras o puedas: acaricia a tu bebé, háblale, ayuda a bañarlo, a cambiarle los pañales o a dormirlo.
3. Acostúmbrate al hecho de que no es necesario que tomes todas las decisiones ahora ni que tengas ahorrado totalmente el dinero de la universidad cuando llegue el bebé. Ya tendrás ocasión de encargarte de todo esto, así que déjate llevar y disfruta los momentos antes de que pasen.
4. Habla con tu pareja. Comparte con ella tus sentimientos al respecto de todos estos cambios. No todo tiene que ver con ella y te garantizamos que agradecerá que le gustará saber que tú también necesitas su apoyo.
El papel del papá en el embarazo
Es obvio que no puedes llevar físicamente a tu bebe en tu vientre y tu esposa sí, pero eso no significa que no puedas participar activamente en el embarazo de todas formas. He aquí algunas cosas que puedes hacer para sentirte compenetrado con tu esposa y el bebé desde su concepción.
1. Dale a la futura madre masajes cuando sea necesario (pista: son necesarios TODO el tiempo).
2. Píntale las uñas de los pies: ella no se las ve.
3. Acompáñala a todas las citas médicas, ecografías y revisiones para implicarte del proceso.
4. Lee información relacionada con el embarazo y la paternidad. ¡Hombre prevenido vale por dos!
5. Asiste a clases de preparación al parto. Será un buen entrenamiento el paritorio.
6. Pon a punto la cámara (tanto de vídeo como fotográfica) para grabar todos los momentos emocionantes.
7. Sé su caballero andante: protégela de la negatividad que puedan transmitirle sus padres, sus suegros y demás personas.
8. Llévate a tu media naranja a pasar unas vacaciones románticas para dos: un homenaje a vuestro pasado y una promesa para el mañana.
9. Sal corriendo en mitad de la noche a buscar cualquier cosa que se le antoje (conseguirás muchos puntos).
10. Investiga el montaje de los artículos que estáis almacenando para el cuarto del bebé. A ella no le interesan los detalles sobre cómo se arma cada cosa. ¡Quiere que lo hagas y cuanto antes! ¡Es una orden!
11. Dale todos los caprichos. Llevar a vuestro bebé en su interior es una gran responsabilidad.
12. Sal a pasar esas últimas noches de juerga con tus amigos. Todo eso va a cambiar.
13. Empieza a ahorrar. ¡El colegio, la universidad y la boda llegan antes de lo que parece!
14. Ponte una tripa postiza y paséala durante todo un día si de verdad te atreves a experimentar la situación por la que está pasando ella.
El papel del papá en el paritorio
• Decide desde un principio si realmente quieres estar en el paritorio. Algunos padres quieren participar en todo y sin embargo, otros se marean o se sienten impotentes y puede que incluso incapaces de ver a sus parejas en esa situación. Decide qué es lo mejor para ti.
• Asiste de antemano a todas las clases de preparación al parto con tu pareja para que conozcáis todas las técnicas de respiración, visualización positiva y masaje. También para que sepas qué esperar durante el parto y en general en la sala de partos.
• Repasa tu plan de parto con tu pareja para entender su forma de pensar y qué cosas quiere excluir del parto y la experiencia del alumbramiento. De este modo puedes defender sus decisiones cuando esté ocupada durante el proceso de dar a luz.
• Crea un entorno saludable para mamá. Se puede conseguir de varias formas, desde poniendo la música apropiada hasta invitando a las personas que ella quiera que estén presentes.
• Sé el portavoz de mamá en la sala de partos, ya que puede que no sea capaz de expresar por su cuenta sus necesidades o deseos mientras esté allí.
• Comunícate con la mamá durante el parto, garantizando que todas sus necesidades y deseos se cumplen, pero respeta los posibles momentos en los que quizá no quiera hablar. En ese caso, aprende cómo ayudarla mejor sin verbalizar: podrías hacerlo mediante un masaje, caricias o ayudándola con la respiración.
• Aprende cómo y en qué parte del cuerpo darle masajes para determinados dolores con el fin de prestar ayuda constructivamente.
• Debes entender que el parto no es un problema que haya que solucionar: se debe vivir la experiencia tal y como es, así que mantente fuerte y positivo de modo que le transmitan buenas vibraciones y fuerzas para seguir adelante.
• No pasa nada si solamente quieres estar presente —como hombre debes aprender a aceptar que no es necesario nada más.
• Corta el cordón umbilical si quieres y eres capaz.
• Ayuda a limpiar al bebé y a la mamá —se presta a crear lazos afectivos.
• El parto y el alumbramiento pueden ser una experiencia agotadora y estresante pero no olvides disfrutar los primeros momentos con tu nueva familia, ¡son irrepetibles!
Crea vínculos con tu bebé, papá
Una vez se ha calmado la exaltación por el recién llegado, en la mayoría de hogares una sola persona se encarga de criar, y esa es la mamá. No nos malinterpretes, la mayoría de los padres también están ahí, pero sólo para grabar con su cámara los pequeños momentos de ternura. ¡Tienes que darte cuenta de que no sólo eres el padre principal, sino el único!
Pero no temas; hoy en día los papás son más conscientes en cuanto a la paternidad. Visitan páginas webs especializadas y leen por encima las secciones para bebés de los grandes almacenes. Puede que esto no parezca de gran ayuda, pero teniendo en cuenta que en realidad no pueden dar el pecho o dormir al bebé como lo hace la mamá, es un buen comienzo.
Si eres padre, aquí tienes algunas formas estupendas de involucrarte:
• Si tu bebé utiliza u biberón o una taza de iniciación, dedica tiempo a dárselo.
• Puedes acompañar a tu esposa a la tienda y cuidar del bebé mientras ella hace las compras. Esto te ayudará a crear vínculos con el bebé y dejará que ella se concentre en lo que necesita.
• Tómate libre un sábado cuando tengas la ocasión y vigila al bebé mientras ella hace sus cosas, cualesquiera que sean.
• Dale de comer tú mismo al bebé siempre que estés en casa, aunque lo desordenes todo.
• Implícate en la rutina del bebé a la hora de dormir. Reserva un rato para leerle al menos un cuento todos los días o cantarle como mínimo una canción.
• Usa una mochila portabebés para llevarlo a todas partes.
• Baña a tu bebé siempre que tengas ocasión.
• Lee sobre temas de paternidad para que puedas entender mejor al pequeño de la casa.
¡Cosas que los papás hacen mejor que las mamás!
Las mamás pueden llegar a pensar que ellas lo hacen todo mejor que vosotros, los papás, pero no les dejéis salirse con la suya. Aquí tenéis una lista de cosas que podéis hacer mejor que ellas:
1. Hacer eructar al bebé, ya que vuestras manos son más grandes que las de mamá y esto facilita que el bebé expulse los gases mucho más rápido.
2. Llevar de paseo al bebé en una mochila portabebés, porque probablemente mamá se cansará antes.
3. Dormir al bebé, puesto que vuestro abrazo es más firme y vuestros fuertes brazos tienen un efecto mecedora más poderoso.
4. Dar el biberón al bebé, ya que cuando las mamás lo intentan, los bebés pueden captar el olor de la leche materna y rechazarlo.
5. Darle de comer, porque como lo hacéis tan habitualmente, tenéis más paciencia.
6. Decir que no, porque el bebé os percibe como el cabeza de familia y vuestra palabra es sagrada (¡aunque luego le hagáis caso a mamá en todo!).
7. Ganaros su simpatía: ella es la que tiene que inculcar disciplina como diariamente, mientras que vosotros los podéis llevar a comprar helados, dejarles más tiempode televisión y o escaparos con ellos a la juguetería cada dos por tres.
8. Razonar con los niños, porque las mamás tienden a ser emocionales e y volubles, mientras que a vosotros se os da mejor reunir un conjunto de argumentos lógicos para ayudarles a comprender vuestro punto de vista.
9. Enseñarles a montar en bici, volar una cometa, chutar un balón y lanzar a la canasta.
10. Eres el hombre más grande, fuerte y poderoso a los ojos de tu hijo —¡prácticamente un superhéroe!
11. Eres el hombre más grande, más fuerte y más guapo a los ojos de tu hija. ¿¡Hace falta decir más!?
Recuerda, no existe el padre perfecto ni la madre perfecta. Tan sólo sois dos seres humanos intentando con todas sus fuerzas hacerlo lo mejor que pueden. ¡Así que esforzaros al máximo e iréis por el buen camino!
