Spanish term

sable

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime Parts of boat / yacht
SPAIN. In this context, I don't think the glossary entry fits the bill:

"Velas : Mayor entre el primer y el tercer sable ( Parte central )
Foque entre la parte inferior y el primer sable ( foques 1 & 2 )
Spinnaker parte central (S1)"
Proposed translations (English)
5 +2 batten

Same kind of thing, different application. Battens were just (originally) strips of wood. In foul weather canvas was stretched over the hatches (made of grating) and battens were hammered over the canvas into slots around the hatch edges, stretching and holding down the canvas and keeping out most of the water. Nowadays sail battens are made of all kinds of fancy stuff and force the sail to keep an areodynamically efficient shape.
Note from asker:
Cheers PG, sounds luffly! I was hoping you'd be around. As in "batten down the hatches"... I've aways wondered what that meant ...
