About Rhetoric and Communication
What is Rhetorical Communication?
Rhetoric, or the art of pragmatic communication, studies how human beings use symbolic means, especially language, to exert influence over each other. In other words, the study of rhetoric is the study of how human beings communicate in order to get things done, and as such it considers communication as both process and practice. As the rhetorical theorist Lloyd Bitzer explains, the goal of rhetorical discourse is "ultimately to produce action or change in the world; it performs some task. In short, rhetoric is a mode of altering reality." [Lloyd F. Bitzer, "The Rhetorical Situation" Philosophy and Rhetoric 1 (1968) 3-4.] In both theory and application, the study of rhetoric always involves the practical reasons why people communicate and the strategies they use to make their communication effective. http://www.engr.usask.ca/dept/techcomm/

The sense in which the category of narrative transcends any particular medium, then, is not to be conceived in deep structural terms, by invoking medium-independent notions such as fabula, or story grammar: it is a discursive matter—a communicative rhetoric that exploits certain representational capabilities that are common to a range of media.

And a little more on that:
Specially speaking, rhetoric consists of two basic aspects:
a Communicative rhetoric, which lays emphasis on choosing words and phrases, selecting sentence patterns, organizing paragraphs and whole pieces of writing in such a way that ideas are expressed most clearly, most accurately, and most appropriately, and the best results are achieved in communication.
b Aesthetic rhetoric, which stresses vividness and gracefulness in expressing one’s ideas by artistic approaches like the use of figures of speech so as to increase the emotional and reasoning power of one’s speech or writing.

Discussion
http://english.cmu.edu/degrees/ma_rhetoric/discourse.html
How does "rhetoric/discourse studies" sound? Bear in mind that my text is on issues of curriculum and either "courses on X" or "X studies" beg to be there in the term. Google is somewhat conducive to that.
