Italian term

nesso temporale

Italian to English Medical Medical (general) Medical report
Is this just temporal nexus or is there a better/clearer way of putting it? Thanks :)

Discussion

Joseph Tein Jun 6, 2019:
temporal relationship vs. timing I agree that "timing" implies that events happened in close proximity to each other, but I also think that the word "relationship" expresses something important and "temporal relationship" says it more clearly and directly. I've done lots of reports like this, and I use "temporal relationship." So does the FDA, for example -- see page 45 in this document: https://www.fda.gov/media/96408/download

Here's a sentence from a European Medicines Agency document: "The major drawback of cross-sectional studies is that the temporal relationship between exposure and outcome cannot be directly addressed." (found here: http://www.ema.europa.eu/docs/en_GB/document_library/Scienti...

From what I can tell, "temporal relationship" is a key, standard term used in Adverse Drug Reaction reports. It's not relevant, then, that "timing" may "flow much better." We need to use terminology that is appropriate and consistent with standard usage in the field.
Sarah Webb (asker) Jun 6, 2019:
Yes sorry Joseph - I forgot to change the field from a previous post. It's a case report.
Joseph Tein Jun 6, 2019:
SAE report Sarah, from the wording it seems that you're dealing with a Serious Adverse Event report rather than a "medical report." Is this correct? These aren't about any particular patient's medical treatment, but rather about possible side effects from administering a particular drug.
Marco Solinas Jun 6, 2019:
Time link, time connection? It sounds as if a lethal case of PRES followed closely the administration of Nexavar. The text seem to refer to this time connection.

agree Joseph Tein : When I check online, it appears that "relationship" is the word most often used in these serious adverse event reports.

Grazie Gilberto!
agree Luigi Argentino : I prefer this translation. Moreover in the recent dispute and consequent sentence about vaccines and autism I found for short time "temporal proximity" https://www.sciencemediacentre.co.nz/2017/06/22/european-cou...

timing

I don't think "temporal nexus" would work. A nexus is a connection or coming together, and I think the idea is "the fact that it happened at this particular time".
Peer comment(s):

neutral Joseph Tein : Hi Phil. I think what's needed is "relationship" because these reports are about judging whether there is a causal connection between a drug and an adverse outcome. // Let me add: and "temporal relationship" is standard usage in this type of report.

I think that is implied by my answer.
agree Claudia Letizia : I find that timing flows much better and also that when talking about "timing" it is implicit that we are talking about a relationship how the fact that something happened at a given time has a particular significance in relation to something else.

Thanks. I don't have any problem with "temporal relationship", but I think "timing" is clearer and more concise.

time frame

definition: a period of time, especially a specified period in which something occurs or is planned to take place.

(it is true that temporal relationship seems to be of standard use).
