Discussion

wfarkas (X) Jan 16, 2009:
promotional/development loans vs. subsidized loans If the advisory services referred to above are targeted at players in the international financial co-operation arena (developed countries assisting emerging economies) then by all means 'promotional/development loans' is an excellent match for 'Förderungsdarlehen'. The term 'subsidized loans' is more generic and would probably be more appropriate in a national or local context (e. g. local/municipal/provincial governments providing subsidized funding for targeted regional infrastructure development, local housing initiatives, access to home ownership, etc.)
Heike Schwarz Jan 15, 2009:
promotional vs. development I guess the Germans finetuned the meaning of these words and applied them very specifically (see my link below). The question is, how much weight does the literal meaning carry and what is used for "best practise" purposes. Essentially in combination with "loan", "grant", "fund", etc. the words "development" and "promotional" can have different meanings but they can also mean the same! Having said that, back to the original question: Presented with a list of different "products", i.e. "..., Förderungsdarlehen, ..., Entwicklung,...", I would, if possible, reflect the differences in meaning in the source language and therefore prevent using the same word for Förderung and Entwicklung in English.

promotional loan

This is not as common as development loan, but is also in use, especially in Germany, and, as it seems, Taiwan (see link) ;-)

Actually, the German Government distinguishes between the two (see link).
Example sentence:

In accordance with the government\'s policy on upgrading industrial innovation, the IDB is launching a new initiative for industrial R&D promotional loans to lead and help industry invest more resources in research.

Promotional loans have been used since the beginning of 2003. They are used to finance projects which are eligible for promotion from a development-policy perspective and economically viable.

agree Reinhard Ursprung : with regards from Taiwan ;-)

Thanks Reinhard :-)
neutral wfarkas (X) : I would associate 'promotional' with the launching of a new loan product by a commercial bank, whereby for instance 'promotional' rates would be available for a limited time (introductory period).

Development funding is available to IOSH members or groups of members to fund the development of an initiative or project that furthers the aims ...

Thank you for taking the time to comment. Bearing in mind the context is not clearly defined, your own submission is equally valid. I guess it is up to the Asker to decide what fits best.
