Guidance as to how best translate the second element will be appreciated this Friday afternoon!

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Well, Phil, obviously if this is referring to some specific exhibiton, rather than just in general terms, as I understood from Asker's all-too-skimpy context, then obviously an ad hoc solution ought to be possible.
Let us just note that, apparently, according to Asker, contrary to normal usage, where 'exposition événement' would mean 'event exhibition' — i.e. an exhibition that was in some way being promoted as a 'special event' — here the intended meaning appears to be 'an exhibition about some particular historical event' — which clearly needs to be handled differently. Remember, the context as given says nothing about the actual size or indeed importance of the exhibition itself — it could be quite a small exhibition about some major world event; though admittedly, that seems unlikely!
Thank you Tony M. |

philgoddard
: I think it's more likely to mean that the exhibition is a major event, but we need the context.

I don't think so Phil, from past experience of translating for this sort of thing, and from Asker's own definition of it; that's why I think 'event exhibition' isn't safe to use unless it's been previously explained in full.

: bien d'accord avec philgoddard, il s'agit d'un "major event"

I don't know how you can say that, in the face of asker's context: "An exhibition focused on a grave episode in history" — I think you are misunderstading what Phil has said! It could be quite a small exhibition, but about a key event.

: I think "commmerotaive exhibition" would work; no need to specify whether or not "major"

Thanks, C! That certainly sounds like one possibility...

Discussion
If so, I think you're right, Tony, though I don't think your suggested translation quite fits the context. Maybe "commemorative exhibition".
There is no real suggestion that the exhibition is 'brand new' or particularly unique. I am leaning towards 'imporant' or even 'weighty'.
