Contact with the outside world had been lost the instant Julian died.

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Aug 25, 2004:
ǰ For disobeying orders, the President declared Julian a traitor, and she oersaw his trail and conviction. The entire process took less than a minute. (ΪǿƻãǺ)His quarters were remodeled to serve as his prison cell. In the next ten minutes, three separate attempts were made on his life. Not everyone agreed with the court's sentence, it seemed. Which was understandable. Contact with the outside world had been lost the instant Julian died.

3 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Very confusing, isn't it? I'm trying to see it this way: Since people hated Julian for his betraying, they wanted him to die so as to cut down the contact with the out world. (He's the only one who was able to go out in their tiny world.) And later since Julian was not dead, it could be a subjunctive sentence. Anyway, thanks for all you all, I'm happy :)"

See blow.

Thanks! I am confident that mine at least grammatically makes sense, though I do not know the story well. :)
disagree chica nueva : no 如果here. 完全已经是过去的事了.past perfect 'had been lost', past simple 'died'

One of the ways to understand the sentence.

This is one way to understand the sentence.

All right, according to the context you provided, I would try this way:

FYI

The moment I saw him I knew that there was no hope.
He felt a thrill the moment he got into the theatre.
The instant I saw him I knew he was my brother.
We'll leave the minute you're ready.

Contact with the outside world had been lost the instant Julian died.

agree Chinoise : Good.
