Orphan
A term used in printing to describe the positioning of the first line of a paragraph at the last line of a page. However, Microsoft uses the term ‘orphan’ to describe the last line or lines of a paragraph that print on an otherwise blank page.

Orphan control is Microsoft’s solution to the frequently encountered problem of a last page being printed with only a line or two of text on it. Internet Explorer 7 can detect when such an over-run might occur.It will then shrink the content slightly and almost imperceptibly. The result is that the output is much neater and less paper is wasted.
