Italian term

sostantivo convertibile

Italian to English Other Linguistics linguistic
"“Registro” è un sostantivo convertibile anche al plurale. La pluralità del termine implica che i registri siano insiemi di oggetti che possano essere numerati ed identificati in modo non ambiguo"

It's referring to the noun "register" (i.e. linguistic register)

Discussion

Marco Solinas Dec 8, 2021:
To Asker You may be right, but I read it as meaning that "registro" is a noun that can be converted into the plural. Italian does not have the convenient modifier "countable" to signify this concept
Bethany Kachura (asker) Dec 8, 2021:
I'm not sure that would make sense, because it would be like saying "register is a countable noun even in the plural"... when the definition of a countable noun is that it has a different form in the plural
Marco Solinas Dec 8, 2021:
To Asker "Countable noun"? Would that work?
Bethany Kachura (asker) Dec 8, 2021:
I understand what "registro" is in linguistics. I'm unsure of the term "sostantivo convertibile" used to describe it. In the field of linguistics I can't find anything like "convertible noun". Unless "convertibile" is not a linguistic term but intended in the general sense that the noun can be used in more than one way...
Tom in London Dec 8, 2021:
Registro I think the term you're asking about is "registro". If so, I think you should change your question.

It is a noun that can be declined

In altre parole: è un sostantivo che può essere declinato.

Declinazione in italiano

La declinazione riguarda, nella lingua italiana, solo genere (maschile e femminile) e numero (singolare e plurale); il caso viene sostituito dall'uso delle preposizioni. Vengono declinati sostantivi, aggettivi, articoli e pronomi.

https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declinazione_(linguistica)#:~:...

In linguistics, declension is the changing of the form of a word, generally to express its syntactic function in the sentence, by way of some inflection. The inflectional change of verbs is called conjugation.

Declensions may apply to nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, and articles to indicate number (e.g., singular, dual, plural), case (e.g., nominative case, accusative case, genitive case, dative case), gender (e.g., masculine, neuter, feminine), and a number of other grammatical categories.

I think, I was too quick in reaching conclusions.

Check:

Register is a substantive that can also be pluralised in connection with the plurality of linguistic registers

Note from asker:
"sostantivo + convertibile al plurale" - that makes a lot of more sense!
Peer comment(s):

agree philgoddard : I agree with "pluralised". Bethany is parsing it wrongly - it's not "sostantivo convertibile", but " sostantivo " + "convertibile al plurale".
